Which Sega Console is your favorite?

You can get them with all sorts of mods installed like new power supplies, all the way to SD drives that replace the CD drive. I got a Japanese Saturn with a cartridge that allows US and Japanese games and even burned disks to be played. So, I can get a hold of a Japanese fan translated game, burn it to a disc and play it just fine.

I only ever owned a Game Gear but I borrowed quite a few consoles from a mate who collected, the Dreamcast was fantastic but I had the most fun on the Saturn!

This settles it, I want a Sega Saturn for my birthday.

Last time I went into a thrift shop half jokingly looking for a Saturn I ended up walking out with a stack of big box PC games and a very cheap Atari Lynx. They had so much more but my wallet is thin.

Let’s see what serendipity brings me this autumn…

My favorite is, by far, the Dreamcast.

Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, Typing of the Dead, Shenmue, Power Stone, Seaman, NBA 2K, ChuChuRocket, and so many more…

I recommend looking for JP Saturns, they tend to be cheaper and more abundant depending on where you look. I got a used one off of Sendico for absurdly cheap (including some games bundled with it!), it wasn’t outputting video signal but all I had to do was replace a few caps on the board.

Pair it with a Saroo and some nice controllers and you’re pretty much set for life.

The Genesis was my first ever gaming console as a little kid, so I have so many formative memories playing Earthworm Jim (also loved the cartoon spinoff), some Sonic games, Crystal’s Pony Tale and especially the beautiful but frustrating Ecco the Dolphin. I still spin the Ecco soundtrack, either the original or even better (but less nostalgic) Sega CD OST quite frequently.

grew up as the weird kid with a master system, so genesis was a huge deal back then & is still one of my all-time favorites

as a young teen saving for it at the presumed launch, the surprise one & high price put me really onto some sour grapes about the saturn, and i ended up sold on a PSX soon after. it wouldn’t be till the early 2010s when id finally have some funds & time to dive into that wonderful library, which was also around the time we all started seeing prices start to go through the roof, sadly. got some really great deals locally before the bubble took off, at least!

dreamcast had me back at launch, and last year for the 25th anniversary of said us launch, i had a small party in my new hometown where we used a dreampi to get it back online, that was a blast. what a time

as barley said, the saturn translation scene alone in the last few years has been absolutely on fire - i need to dive into sakura wars & baroque in the coming months, and continue holding out hope for a segagaga fan translation one day. rent-a-hero a year or two back was such a highlight for me

all 4 consoles stay in heavy rotation over RGB at my house, even if they’re mostly enjoyed via everdrive or ODE these days!
