I for one adore the Saturn and desperately wish most of its library wasn’t japan only
Least fan translations gave fixed most of that problem!

I was a Nintendo kid growing up, but now that I’m in the collecting phase of my life I gotta go with the Dreamcast. It’s just so little and cute and represents such an important phase in gaming.
Also has impeccable vibes.
I love the dreamcast and am excited to snag one with GDEMU so I can try to hook up the Internet to it~ Apparently people are still playing in online Dreamcast lobbies even now!
one of the dozens who had a Saturn during its lifetime. the Mega Drive might have been the GOAT and the Master System & Dreamcast have extremely interesting and diverse libraries but i’ll always have a soft spot for the Saturn because of the games that came out at the time that you couldn’t find anywhere else, and some of the miracles that console pulled off (Saturn Quake!).
bitterly gutted Sega never did a Saturn mini, apparently the best we can hope for is Like a Dragon to get new emulators.
If you haven’t been poking around the Saturn has actually had a bit of a Renaissance recently! Between fan translations and homebrew projects and mods there’s never really been a better time to dive back into its library
i have a satiator but no space atm to hook up my saturn to my hdtv, and especially no space for my crt anywhere right now ![]()
but…maybe i can figure something else out cos i do miss the actual hardware.
I finally got around to getting a decent CRT set up in an office space and have been looking to expand and Saturn and Dreamcast are well up on my list!
Mega Drive is my favourite Sega console! It’s the first Sega console I ever owned, originally as an Amiga to PlayStation gap-filler, and fell back in love with it five years ago after picking one up again and getting into collecting for it. I dig the Mk1 design so much, too.
Its a great console! tbh I find myself playing its library a lot more than some later Sega consoles just because they are everywhere and easy to play!
I know one of the next games on my list on that console is the Patlabor RPG that recently got translated!
Growing up I only ever had a Game Gear and a Saturn, with 3 or 4 games for each.
I would have my Saturn hooked up right now if I could find the damn disc for Virtual Hydlide!!
I had a Saturn but never a Game Gear! Its sad because I wanted to play the Shining Force title on it XD
It’s really great to see how much Saturn stuff is getting translated these days! The library is so diverse and rich for a console often typecast as being mostly shooters and fighting games. Lots of weird little niche titles across a range of genres, and some fantastic RPGs. <3 But a lot of it is locked behind a language barrier like Lain said. Nice to see that barrier coming down slowly, even as someone who speaks Japanese. :)
I’m probably fondest of the Saturn. I love its controller, the hardware, all the weird little curiosities in the library, and the general look and feel of many of its heavy hitters. But I think I play the Mega Drive most because I grew up with it, it’s super-nostalgic, and so many of the titles are easy pick up and plays. I’m also super-fond of the Dreamcast and I have lots of nostalgia for the Game Gear, but yeah, definitely Mega Drive and Saturn are peak for me.
Sometimes Im jealous of your ability to just go look in those libraries and be able to read whats happening XD I need to buckle down and find time to learn a bit of japanese tbh
I know it’s just a pared down version of the Genesis/Megadrive game, but Home Alone on the Game Gear is a fascinating platformer / tower defense hybrid where you craft weapons and traps to stop the Wet Bandits from robbing the neighbourhood. I think it still holds up.
Also, Sonic Triple Trouble (a Game Gear exclusive until I think a recent bundle of older Sonics) has great tunes, like the boss music and the end of zone 2: https://youtu.be/lcWrovC-pXg
Oh Ive seen stuff for Triple trouble! I know that a team actually recently did a 16 bit fan remake and its really solid! https://gamejolt.com/games/sonictripletrouble16bit/322794
@Lainwithtea You should definitely go for it! Learning Japanese is one of the best things I ever did, and not just for the media. Has opened so many doors and led to so many lovely experiences. <3
I think the Game Gear library is a wee bit underrated in general! A lot of really solid games, and outside of a few all time heavy hitters like Pokemon and Link’s Awakening, I think the library compares quite well with what you find on the Game Boy. You get Master System game compatibility via an accessory too. <3 A shame the battery life was so wretched. ![]()
I also think the game gear just looks cool.
All Sega consoles look cool. Even the Neptune looks sick as hell.
It also had a bespoke TV tuner. Which I’m sure was totally impractical and not at all a good viewing experience, but was the absolute dream accessory for me as a little kid in the early 90s.
Yeah one of my rich cousins had a Game Gear with the tuner back on Aruba. Perfect for watching the one local broadcast channel and maybe two Venezuelan channels if the wind was blowing in the right direction, all on the worst LCD screen designed by man on batteries that would last 15 minutes.
God I love technology.
Hey for the time that’s revolutionary!
