Same, same. The idea of watching TV on something like it was so cool.
I was going to come here to talk about the Saturn as well. It feels like the library is 90% hidden gems.
The Genesis was my first ever console, followed up by the Dreamcast, so they’re high up there for me. The Master System/Mark III is also quite impressive.
So really, all SEGA consoles are the best, but, yeah, Saturn, I like that one the most.
With a Baroque Forum Sig I’d Imagine so~
Seriously an underrated treat that NEEDS a modern release in west!
Yeah, Baroque is great on Saturn. I’m cautiously optimistic that the Baroque-Ya compilation that Sting announced might lead to a worldwide release, but it’s hard to say.
in defence of the game gear (and by extension the lynx) those screens were par for the course for all those small portable tvs. the 80s were a wonderful time of ‘we shouldn’t but we can so fuck it’
Definitely the Saturn. My dad got me one for my birthday in the Spring of ‘96. The didn’t have any in stock at the store except the display model, so they threw in a bunch of games to make up for selling him the display for retail price. Looking back on it they were probably doing everything they could to clear the shelves for more PlayStation games. Dreamcast would be second. Just a wonderful console all around with a great library of games.
Honestly thats pretty rad! Stuff like that sadly doesnt happen in large retail anymore and its a lil sad because I have several similar tales from way back when
I’ve never owned many myself and have limited experience with them, but just going based of vibes… its gotta be the Dreamcast!
I only grew up with the Genesis and Dreamcast. Missed out on Saturn.
Since the Megadrive is the only one I ever seen in person, that’s clearly the victor. Though growing up when I did the oldest consoles I’ve ever seen were the N64 and PS1, with only a single XBOX that I’ve ever seen working and that was when the 360 was already released.
Mega Drive / Mega CD was my favourite of them growing up. Much improved on the Master System and no-one I knew even had a Dreamcast. So many great RPGs and who could forget Dune 2 for introducing you to that type of strategy game.
This startup is so legendary. It’s an absolute shame this console didn’t take off ![]()
Thats super fair! A lot of people really only had choice of one or other and didnt get to experience them!
Back in my small hometown there was a video rental store (it still exists, now they’re like a full on ISP, computer store, etc., so they survived the winter.) and they had Mega Drives. I spent a ton of time there playing all sorts of games, none of which I remember the names of. They rented out cartridges as well. I remember convincing my parents to rent one only to realize to my great disappointment that they don’t fit in my bootleg chinese famicom.
I also had a brief affair with a Dreamcast which belonged to a german family me and my dad were staying at. I remember playing a bunch of Turok and Surf Rocket Racers and loving it!
I grew up with the Genesis, even now when there’s a Sega classic collection of that era of games I always go running to get it.
Between the Saturn and the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast is that bit gruntier and looks pretty nice with internal upscaling. But the Saturn has those lovely crunchy pixels which look lovely scaled up 1:1
I was a SEGA kid from day one so started with the Master System, upgraded to a Mega Drive then begged my parents for a Saturn when NiGHTS came out, completely ignoring the PlayStation and N64.
I was a teenager in the late 90’s and the Saturn was my life. I had a subscription to the official UK magazine, listened to music in my room with the Saturn’s visualiser, and brought it round to friends houses for parties. I even managed one glorious evening of 10 player Saturn Bomberman, doubling up on controllers with a Saturn owning friend.
I loved my Dreamcast but it never had the same feel as the Saturn. I still have my PAL Saturn untouched and in working order, but got a Japanese system a year ago so I could play all the ‘import’ games I read about in the latter stages of the Saturn magazine’s life; X-Men vs Street Fighter, Grandia and Shining Force 3 part 2 and 3.
Sega Saturn! It was the first console I ever saw or played. The first friend I made when I moved to this town had one when I was 5. We played Sonic R, Bug and NiGHTS!
Never had a Dreamcast, but I loved how it looked. Now I’m an adult with money I hope to one day get hold of a Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, and a VMU.
not really my favorite since i never really owned any sega consoles, but from a technical perspective the master system is like, really cool for an 8-bit system.
in hindsight it really is a wonder, its capabilities are pretty underrated. i think it just launched in a weird way in europe, not to mention north america being in the grip of the nintendo at the time.
one aspect i kinda miss from that era is that the master system was still a viable console for people on a budget even with the mega drive in full swing. i miss that long overlap. i know we still have cross gen games but you’d get quite a few unique interpretations of games on it. the master system version of aladdin was its own thing and far more challenging than the mega drive version, for example.
