I know about the Master System Sonic mostly because the Master System had the sickest cover aesthetic. Look at these:
I never played the 8-bit Sonic itself though!

they play more like traditional platformers (especially the first two) and i wonder if you’d get on better with them.
My favorite video game of all time is (and always will be) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. It’s the video game that made me fall in love with video games. ![]()
My top 5:
Chibi-Robo is not included because I still haven’t played it even though I could boot it up right now on my Switch 2. ![]()
Syndicate is under appreciated. The sci fi world style is inspirering. Flat, beige corporate suburb crap places. Excessive surveillance pressure and population oppression. Thinking about the art style often. No one. N0 ONE, has tried this design style since…. (?)
Chrono trigger. Listening to the sound track maybe 50 times a year. Remixes, rearrangements, I consume it! Got mega nosta when thinking about ct.
To mention something few people know/remember.
My secretly all time highs are* - >
Little Big Adventure 2
Charming. Grand story. Art style was very different at the time. Sort of exotic since it is basically French innit?
(* Apart from Ocarina, chrono, Yoshis Island, half life, dwarf fortress, cave story, Zack and wiki, majoras AND chibirobo!)
I listen to Chrono Cinematica in the car on a regular basis. It’s one of a handful of albums just in my typical rotation.
so good!!!
I had the oddest time when Sonic Mania came out, reading about how ‘difficult’ people were finding it before I realised this Sonic/Mario platforming brain divide was such a big thing.
I’ve moved between many genres and styles in between those monikers. Shooters, RPGs, Strategy, Horror, the works. And I have to say.
If there was one game I could keep out of all the others I have experienced to play for all time, it’d be Cataclysm: Bright Nights for its mechanical complexity, depth of mechanics, and solemn duty to resist over-complication.
And even that feels like a cop-out since I have a LOT of favourites and I can’t decide. I love Super Robot Wars, Metal Gear, R-Type, Hitman, Gundam Breaker, Project Wingman, Persona, Ultrakill… I never really picked a single identity and just love them all with what seems like equal favoritism.
Favorite-favorite? So hard to pick ;;
I always will be down for Prey ‘17 or Dishonored 1/2 - all three of those were games that I enjoyed enough to actually 100% on my own. (Mooncrash not withstanding, I insist that should have been a spinoff and it ruined my 100% rating).
Reaching even farther back though, possibly one of the Sly Cooper games? Those were like, the only age appropriate games I would replay a lot when I still was very active with my consoles. I’d steal my mom’s more interesting games sometimes, but never replayed games nearly as much as the Sly games. Picking between 1 and 2 is impossible for me, though. The writing was so good and the found family was something I just really latched onto a lot ![]()
My favourite game is probably Final Fantasy VIII. But the reason for FF VIII to be my favourite game of all time is that I liked playing it as a teen. Nowadays, I would say it’s Deltarune. At this point, only four of the seven chapters have been released, and chapter 2 is my favourite chapter. Final Fantasy IX is a game I want to replay because I never actually finished it, but a friend of mine finished the last parts for me.
I also don’t think I have a singular favorite. I have a list that I’ve enjoyed growing over the years (and luckily none has ever left that list). I think Ocarina of Time has had the biggest impact on me because of where I was in life when I played it. I resonated so strongly with it, and it felt like something more than a game to me as a kid, like it was actually a portal to another world.
I could put a lot here, but the one game on my favorite’s list that I don’t see a lot of representation for is Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil. It’s a game that isn’t particularly groundbreaking, but in my opinion so incredibly successful at what it sets out to do. It’s dedicated to delighting whoever plays it, and it feels like playing a Saturday morning cartoon.
Also got impacted by ocarina of time growing up, but if I was to choose one, for purely emotional attachment, it would be Beyond Good & Evil
That game probably was relevant to my deciding to study journalism and my love for cameras
Tho i did replay recently (the anniversary edition that is) and i have to admit that i like other games more nowadays. But the emotional attachment makes me retain it as a personal favorite
My comfort game is Sonic 3 & Knuckles, aka the best Sonic game. It’s the one game I’ve finished more than ever and tickles the part of my brain that is content that everything is perfect. That means I can’t count the version on Sonic Origins because as much as I like it widescreen, I just outright reject the new music and it causes me something not too dissimilar to actual physical pain to get through. Fortunately there’s mods to fix that!
the answer is, of course, Chibi Robo!
that’s right… Chibi Robo Park Patrol for the Nintendo DS!
Always loved lining my pockets with absurd amounts of cans of “Pork ‘n Beans” ![]()
NiGHTS Into Dreams. I loved it so much that I bought a Saturn primarily to play the original version.
Underrated ass gem ![]()
