It’s so lovely, and way ahead of its time! I really need to get around to the remake at some point. I loved Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, which was obviously a big love letter to both the series and Dragon’s Trap in particular. So very keen to play a more direct modern remake of the game itself. Art style is gorgeous.
i have that in my backlog, because i was like ‘i never thought wonder boy would ever make a comeback’
my nostalgia for the master system is so strong and wonder boy is a huge part of that.
For the longest time my answer would be Terraria, but at some point along the way, due to me growing into an adult and evolving my tastes as well as the game evolving to the point it’s kind of unrecognizeable, I think that’s no longer the case.
Currently, I’d probably have to say my favorite game is Baroque for the Sega Saturn. It’s thematically brilliant, and the core dungeon crawling and item management gameplay is really satisfying to me, almost meditative, once you get used to it.
But I do on some level agree with Bob, in a lot of ways I feel like I’ve outgrown having favorites. Baroque isnt nessesarily my favorite because I’ve played it for 8 million hours, but because it’s stuck with me for so long after playing.
I ADORE chibirobo!
one of my all-time favorite games is Super Mario Galaxy 2. It’s an enormous inspiration for my artwork! x)
It’s Yoshi’s Island. It will always be Yoshi’s Island. It was the first video game I understood to be made by human beings, who did so because they wanted me to have fun. I learned English very young, and there is a little developer message in a bonus room that specifically conveys that message to you. Yoshi’s Island is so full of completely wild stuff that shows up exactly once and did not need to be there at all, but all of those things were so fun. In that bonus room after the developer message, Yoshi turns into a submarine, a thing he does maybe three other times in the game. Experiencing the game as something that was made For Me was magical and there is no other video game that will ever be able to generate the same feeling.
All time favourite?
Has to be Streets Of Rage 2. Everything about it is just perfect.
ouuh yoshis island is also one of my favorites x) amazing pick
Yoshi’s Island is a great pick. I actually have a good childhood story about that one. I was over at a friend’s birthday party and they were showing me their games, and remarked that their Super Nintendo didn’t work anymore, and when I told them about the clone console I had that could play Super Nintendo games as well as Genesis games (we only had Genesis games though) and they offered to give me all their games. I didn’t want to do that so I just picked out Yoshi’s Island because I liked Yoshi in Smash Bros.
I played all the way through the game and I still love it.
Yoshi’s Island is an all-timer for sure. Played it to death as a kid
using this as an excuse to remind people that yuzo koshiro posted this (apologies, i can’t get it to embed):
TOUCH FUZZY
GET DIZZY
is it illegal admit that Ive never played yoshis island despite all the other weird shit Ive played?
i’m jealous you’d be able to play it for the first time.
i’m actually partial to the game boy advance version because it lets you fire eggs with the shoulder button.
I am really bad at mario platformers so I always naturally skipped it!
Im much more comfy controlling hedgehogs…
FWIW Yoshi’s Island doesn’t really play like other Mario games. Plus the flutter jump helps you save yourself a lot.
Yoshi’s Island is sick! For me, most Zelda games… I’m a big Zelda head!
Chrono Trigger. It was the first game I played that made me genuinely care about the cast. I still run through it every couple of years.
We have inverse brains!!! The hedgehog feels wrong to control on a fundamental level, and how a Mario controls is the standard of platformers to me.
From what I understand this is pretty common dichotomy depending on which one you spent most time with~ Mario feels so weird for me and it makes me extremely sloppy!
have you ever played the 8-bit versions?
