What have you been listening to?

Haven’t kept up with them lately, but I will go to bat for pretty much anything they did between “Showbiz” and “Black Holes and Revelations”. “The Resistance” and “2nd Law” had a handful of solid tracks between them, but I haven’t heard anything past that so can’t speak to it.

Also, fun songs to play on guitar!

It’s so interesting how everyone (including me) had this phase where they were deeply into Muse for several years and then just dropped them and never looked back, for no real solid reason.

Going to an outdoor concert with them and it being an overall miserable experience didn’t help though.

Anyway, I’ve been listening to a lot of Pixel Grip recently. Only a handful of songs on each album that I like, but I really really like them.

I know this song is about surviving abuse, but the line “And if I’m the one you’re taking power from, Wouldn’t that make me the powerful one?” goes so hard in so many ways.

Been listening to tons of Simply Red over the last few weeks

my beloved angine de poitrine <3

huge huge fan of the second album, they’ve gotten me dangerously close to trying my hand at making microtonal music

I’m not sure what this says about me, but for some reason this has been on a surprising repeat for me here lately: Monarch of Monsters | Vylet Pony

Me and my wife go on road trips whenever she takes her yearly vacation from work, and Justice is always on the playlist.

Something about the french, you know?

Honestly been told to listen to them before, but this is my first time sitting down with them and this rips.

Please check out Rondo Veneziano if you have not already. Group from the 80’s that put together the genius idea of adding an electric bass to classical music. A kind of proto Daft Punk’s Discovery at times.

this video fits so well here hell yea

I’ve been enjoying Keifer Gr33n mixes on YouTube

This whole album fucks, but as I have been staying in a place for over a month where they only know my deadname and are too transphobic for me to use my real one, this song has been helping me keep sane:

just found this but good lord it’s so good

I bought my first new album on CD in a while: the 2021 Tori Amos album Ocean to Ocean. (I am planning on buying In Time of Dragons on CD too but not 'til I get paid).

Back when I was still using Spotify, this record and The Beekeeper got me through a really rough patch after the death of my mother. It is, I think, Tori’s best album since American Doll Posse - not that the albums after that one are bad, they just didn’t grab me like this one did. If I had to pick a favourite track it would probably be ‘Metal Water Wood’, which seems to cry out for some kind of accompanying dance routine, but I’m also very fond of album closer ‘Birthday Baby’ and the epic, orchestrally-backed ‘Swim to New York state’.

It feels good actually owning some new music for a change. It really does change the way you approach listening to a record if you’ve bought it instead of renting it via streaming. And music really does sound much better on CD, I swear there are lots of really cool little guitar trills and other little sonic elements of this I couldn’t make out when I was hearing these tracks as compressed files through phone speakers. Physical media FTW!

I listen to a lot of stuff. From all sorts of things.

But one song I remember coming up recently is this:

I really like this band. The city they’re from? Is only two hours away from mine.
(Phoenix, AZ and Tucson, respectively.)

I don’t have the album physically, but I bought it off Bandcamp a long time ago.

My Grado SR125s broke a month or so ago (one of the gimbals snapped) so I’ve been listening on an alternative set of Meze Audio 99 Classics. The Mezes sound great, but for my taste don’t compare to the clarity and openness of the Grados, so I was delighted when some replacement gimbals I ordered finally turned up this week and I could repair them

I’ve been trying to get some variety in my listening to really put them through their paces:

The intimacy of the vocal recording, the beautiful string arrangements: this sounds gorgeous through them.

Peak Joni Mitchell, and the production is divine

Something a little different! So, so rich timbrally

I don’t know that I’d say Cocteau Twins really require the nicest headphones, more just plenty of volume, but I’ll take any excuse to listen!
