What have you been listening to?

I thought in response to the “How Do You Find New Music” thread we could have one for music recommendation. I’ll start!

I recently grabbed this CD, “I’m with Stupid” by Aimee Mann, from a thrift store.

I really wanted something new to play on my commute. I’ve always been a casual fan and had heard this album before and remember liking it. I think it’s great! I think she’s an awesome songwriter and I love her voice. The mid 90s production I love as well.

Here’s what I think was the biggest single from the album:

Anyway… Hope you enjoy this suggestion and feel free to share what you’ve been jammin’!

I’ll give this a listen - I love the art on the cover.

I’ve had Justice’s Hyperdrama album on repeat for about a week. Current favorite track is Aftrerimage.

While I was taking a walk today Gi’ Mig Chancen Igen by Anne-Tina came on my shuffle and I was reminded of how much I love this song. It really enhanced how nice it felt outside during that walk.

I find out about music from my oldest kid. She’s 13 and her taste in music is… eclectic.

This week she’s been excitedly anticipating the newest song from Yealokre, who is a Filipino-Icelandic singer songwriter. The band and its members are a fictional creation, but the whole thing had a medieval/folk vibe with animal masks and clapping games…

Harpy Hare got TikTok famous last year but it only scratches the surface of this bizarre multimedia narrative being told about the members of the band, the history of the world around them, and the four mythical beings their animal masks are based on.

I have heard more versions of Pinball Wizard than I knew existed recently. This all started as a bit as someone I know an’ love did not know the song somehow so I had to show it to them. Follow up with someone else I hang with collects Vinyls, and now we’re grabbing literally every record we can find that even mentions it looking for a good recording of a good cover of it in good condition.
Has the joke gone too far? No. Not even close. Vinyls are, like, $1 a piece down at the thrift shop we visit. We also collected a few really really old Christmas records to play when we feel right n ready for it (probably like, halfway through Christmas day itself with too little time left to play all the tracks knowing how we all work).

Right this second though? Hollywood, by Car Seat Headrest. CSH was shown to me by a friend and I just vibe with it.

Going back and forth between Epic the Musical, Wolf Alice (tho didnt care much for their last album) and Jorge Ben Jor

I try to always listen to a different album when commuting but these 3 kinda always come back

A lot of dungeon synth over here, which I like to have on if I’m doing something that doesn’t require too much concentration.

There’s kind of a meme among fans that each album is its own distinct sub-genre, and that’s actually true to some extent, which makes it hard to explain
But basically, imagine if you had to score a low-budget fantasy movie with nothing but an old casio. What’s the best you could do? This is the essence of dungeon synth.

Here’s my favourite album if you want to give it a try:

I was reminded of the Dolls Nest OST in a conversation today so here I am, jamming it to this Neco-Arc ass song.

I usually just listen to my local library on shuffle but I have been obsessed with the new BMSR album “Soft New Magic Dream”
Tom Fec just keeps getting better and better and he was already pretty damn good by the time BMSR started back in 2003

I loved the new album by The Cure and I’m pumped they already announced their next one and have apparently already recorded it, so to celebrate recently I’ve been going back and listening to both their studio and live albums that I’ve never given as much love in my fandom that goes back over twenty years to when they were one of my first real “favorite bands”. Even the stuff I considered “lesser” absolutely rules.

Been on a gigantic groove metal bender lately - specifically Pantera, Fear Factory, and Chimaira.

Love music recommendation threads, always end up getting overwhelmed by new stuff lol.

New Aesop Rock is good, I wasn’t too enthusiastic about the last 2 albums so I Here It’s A Mess There Too feels like a return to form. Plus the guy is near 50 too, incredible scenes.
