Worms With Friends is great, I miss those days
In college i’d spend a lot of my downtime playing worms.
Unfortunately, that led to bad stuff so it kinda spoiled the game for me. ![]()
But back then, they were good times.
After being on a Resident Evil kick the last few weeks, I’ve picked up Cryptmaster.
That game is weird, in a really good way. It looks like it’s going to be a dank dingy harsh game, with it’s grayscale graphics, and skeletal “host” and, y’know, it’s called “Cryptmaster”… and then you play it and, oh, no, this is a silly whimsical game with great writing where you make friends with rat people and marry a toad.
Dungeons of Freeport just came out and I’ve really been digging it. It’s got that right mix of nostalgic aesthetic with modern quality of life features.
It does kind of suck that you can only delve one dungeon per calendar day, but as I go on, I appreciate being paced in this fashion. I wake up excited to do my daily delve now!
Runs like a dream on my lo-spec Linux laptop too.
Playing my first Spiderweb Software game. They’re an indie studio that’s mostly just a guy, his wife, and artists they commissions.
They have been making CRPGs independently for over 30 years. They started when I was a toddler. I’m 35.
The first of these I’m playing is the first in their most recent series (a lot of their time right now is remaking older stuff). Queen’s Wish: The Conqueror is pretty great, and the iffy presentation is made up by the fact that you can absolutely the thirty years of experience put into this. The premise of being a spoiled brat of a royal being forced to actually go do something and being thrown into a project to reclaim lost vassal states has a lot of flavor that leads to plenty of quests and even some moral quandaries. I also like how simple the combat, leveling, and maps allow more focus to be placed in the fun flavor text and encounters. There’s some occasionally annoying dungeons, but they’re mostly just really fun to see what new trick or gimmick gets thrown at you. Also like how the simple leveling is balanced out by rewarding you with lots of bonuses for building up your forts.
Highly recommend it, especially if you want a good entry level CRPG.
Some screens:
Still Wakes the Deep ended up being pretty good!
I’d heard comparisons to Alien Isolation which ended up being a little superficial - there’s clearly inspiration with the multitude of tactile interactions within the world (slowly unscrewing vents, breaking locks etc.) and hiding in vents, but the enemy AI never comes close to inspiring the same terror as the Xenomorph, and the environments don’t offer nearly as many options for hiding and evading. Gameplay is also aggressively linear, which felt particularly obvious within the tight corridors of the rig.
Still, none of these complaints really mattered to me all that much as the game absolutely nails the atmosphere and sense of place. The rig is a joy to explore, and as things start to fall apart over the course of the game there’s some fantastic setpieces.
On the whole, the game ended up feeling more like a thrill ride than anything else, but one with excellent pacing and plenty of highlights. If you only want to play one nautically-themed horror game SOMA is still the obvious choice, but otherwise this is an easy recommendation for me ![]()
Alright, officially giving up on Dungeon Keeper Gold. i’m just not having fun with it.
Charted my course for my next game: Demon’s Souls on the PS3. And setting up my PS3 faceblasted me with so much nostalgia.
Tried a bit of Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness, an indie CRPG trying to harken back to the old days. Yeah, another of those. I think it does a solid job of it, honestly, like the unique tone where it’s trying to be darker but not losing the sense of comedy. Also like the surprisingly robust class system, nowhere near Pathfinder levels of complexity but offers plenty of variety to mess around with, and some unique feeling classes. I picked Convoker, a summon focused class.
Also going to get back on Super Robot Wars Y soon for a second run now that the expansion finally released. I was not expecting the new units to be from Star Driver, Ideon (the first eldrich horror mecha anime), and, of all things, that 2007 Idolmaster mecha alt-universe spinoff that was somehow the first Idolmaster licensed anything in the west (among other cool stuff).
I’ve had Super Bomberman R since it came out and it’s been sat there in my backlog this whole time. Figured I’d go through the story mode and… it’s okay I guess? It definitely overstayed its welcome (the last world was diabolical) but I’m glad Bomberman is still relevant. It’s a shame its popularity waned because it’s such a good multiplayer game. Probably doesn’t hit the same online as it did with everyone crammed in front of the same telly.
The old battle theme is timeless though. Bring it back!
I can notice I no longer have access to my ADHD meds as I’ve just been playing nothing but FF14 lately. Do still enjoy reading the large variety of stuff happening in here and seeing what kind of stuff my roommate gets up to.
OK, so I beat 1-1, 2-1, and 3-1 in Demon’s Souls. I’m going for 4-1 next which i have never done before (I usually gave up after beater 1-1, 1-2, 2-1 and 3-1). It’s exciting. I’m excited! I might beat this game 17 years later.
Sorry for the gigantic absence
been jamming the hell outta Vampire Crawlers since Friday and it’s SOOOOO broken, but in the best possible ways. You can make some insane combos and wipe out enemies with just two cards and it’s almost better than the original game
Tried a roguelike based on Minesweeper called Broom Sweeper. Think a run based minesweeper where you go through randomized events on a grid, with a dystopian office culture theme, complete with a clippy tutorial guy who pops up randomly and can never be turned off (there is an option but clicking the checkmark to turn it into an x just makes the checkmark bigger and bigger the more you click it).
I think what made this one click for me is that it doesn’t feel too unfair where you get hit with annoying variables because of how easy you can break the difficulty. I won one run entirely by picking up an item that caused tentacles to replace some dust bunnies on the boards, but also overtook and replaced other items in my inventory, which caused more tentacles to replace dust bunnies to the point I could just one click clear the last few rooms because there was no dust bunnies left. The sheer amount of random elements is really fun and impressive.
Also playing Super Robot Wars Y again now that the expansion is out. Really fun selection of units this time, like the Ideon recruitment mission has the getter pilots take one look at the Godzilla sized god robot and instantly go “what the FUCK is that” (justifiable reaction). The added series also include Star Driver, that one Idolmaster mecha show from 2007, Cross Ange, and the recent Eureka Seven films (the last one, to be precise). The quality of these shows and films are honestly the most questionable of all the DLC characters (Cross Ange is Not Good, let me be clear), but they all bounce off the existing cast in really fun ways. Their units are also really fun. I like that the Idolmaster, of all characters, can somehow tank more hits than the freaking Big O.
Demon’s souls!
it’s… annoying that they gave one of the early bosses a move that allows it to basically heal back to full.
Demon’s Souls update:
I met my new best friend: Patches (the Hyena). He’s such a nice guy AND he sells high quality discount grass. What’ could make me dislike him?
He also doesn’t respect men of the cloth and like… same, dude.
Anyway, dealt with all the stage 1 bosses and the world 1 stage 2 boss… things are looking nice.
EDIT: I kicked boss 2-2’s ass on my second try.
Magic is so fucking fun.
I finally beat a Dragon Quest game(s) after many years of enjoying the series (and making an entire music project from its soundtracks)! I finished DQ 1+2 on the GBC and enjoyed them. Obviously old and stiff in modern terms but a quick intro to the series as a whole and now I’m onto DQ3 (also the GBC version)
I know the remakes are available but it’s quicker, easier, and “cheaper” playing them this way lol I’ll get to them eventually.
Oh! Another soul that played DQ1+2 GBC in modern times!
I’m with you, though I was lucky to be in the right headspace. So my playthrough was mostly the nostalgia of having to draw my own maps for DQ1 ^^
Love that for you! I do miss writing my own notes and maps and stuff.
I’m closer to the end of Demon’s Souls than ever before.
So far i beat 1-2, 2-3, 3-3, 4-1 and 5-1… i’m on 4-2 and god DAMN this is an annoying level. not only do i have to dodge stormbeast harpoon-horns, skeletons AND grim reapers… there’s even invisible enemies that giggle when they spawn. Waugh!
Started a new run at Prologue: Go Wayback!. Accidentally cooked my map. Starting over again.
