Game Dev Show and Tell

It looks like there’s few game devs in here and I bet not everyone wants to start a dedicated thread for their game but still wants to show us what they’ve been working on, so here’s the place to do it!

Are you proud of some janky code you got working?
Greyboxed a new level?
Made some cool art for your game?
Wanna just yap about game dev?

Big or small, i wanna see whatever cool shit you’ve been making!

I’ll start by sharing some WIP art from my 1v1 stealth combat game, GROVE, I’ve been working on while learning Godot.
Here’s how it looked around a year ago, really basic leaves, ponds, mud etc in a top-down arena, before I started experimenting with a more gestural art style with real ink.

I drew sprite sheets of grass and leaves etc by hand, which meant I could be a lot less precise and have a lot more fun making stuff.

And here it is in-game (sorry if its tough to read, both players are invisible, per the main gimmick of the game)

What have you all been working on?

This rocks!

I’ve never messed with Bitsy, but maybe i should give it a shot.

I’ve always been enamoured with ASCII art, i think HTHR FLWRS early stuff is so so good. This looks really cool!

I’m working on a virtual pet website in the same vein as Neopets so I’m joining everyone on the nostalgia train!

It features 3d pets, dressup, minigames, a forum, pretty much what you expect from a virtual pet site. I’m using three.js and angry spite in order to make it.
A friend is helping me with the backend and programming and thanks to this it’s actually all working currently, it’s not just mockups  very happy about that. You can create a pet, dress it up and go exploring for resources currently. Once I iron out all the bugs I’m moving on to a crafting system among other things. A preview of the 3d pet can be seen at umbra.pet

I’m doing this in order to keep myself sane in an insane world. Nothing about commercial game dev makes sense right now so I’m hiding in the past.

Oh my gooood I love that pet site, really cool concept so far I’d totally be interested in playing it once it’s ready! As a backend webdev this is absolutely something I’ve wanted to try doing for ages now but I never had the art skills to even try (I do now though! Maybe I should try it out sometime…)

This is super neat! I’ve never heard of bitsy before but I love the aesthetic. It reminds me of those old school MUDs that were playable through like a nokia with internet. I miss those a ton!

And now for my nonsense! Godscrown!

Over the course of two weeks I developed a card game for a game jam and I’ve got almost entirely good reviews from it which is like, the first game I’ve ever made with such a good reception. Had a couple folks on music/sfx and as soon as that got implemented I felt like I had a real game on my hands. It was such a cool experience. The Jam’s voting period ends in 15 hours from now and I’m real excited to see the results! My current avatar is from this game also!

You can play it here

There’s been some mild discussion over continuing to work on it, and I do have some small plans of adding controller support and finishing the story endings for unlockable characters… but also some much larger plans of redoing the art using 3D assets (mostly for consistent lighting/shader effects) because I’m more comfortable with that, but it’s a lot more effort and I didn’t have that kinda time for the jam

This looks so cool!

Well done on the successful jam!

I’m very slowly chipping away at a gameboy-ish survival horror-ish thing - not sure yet what it’ll end up being, just enjoying the process!

Thank you! I’m making this in Godot - going for a gameboy look and feel, but not sticking too strictly to gameboy limitations. At some point I’d love to try it out, but got some ideas for this project which might mean breaking out of the style a little :)

In the rare moments when I have spoons to works, I’ve been deremaking an old Flash-based jam game in GBStudio: https://goosewho.itch.io/apoclater-drm

ooh everyone’s projects are so cool!

i’ll post more about some of the stuff i’m working on in its own thread at some point here, but for now enjoy this clip of some billboarding sprites i added to my FPS test project today! i always love the effect of billboarding + a full sprite turnaround so i wanted to see if i could implement it myself :)

(didn’t want to bother with hosting this file somewhere so please enjoy this unlisted youtube video)

It’ll embed if you put it on a separate line, like so:

lol thank you, appreciate it

I started working on multiplayer for this game, which feels like a ridiculous thing to attempt this late in the game, but the basics of setting up the connection and role selection is there, so I’m like halfway there. (gameplay is the same basic input method as choosing the roles, so I fear nothing now.)

I think I’m not supposed to use Bitsy in that way but come on, is this still a RPG if there is no boss fight ???

what do you mean “not supposed to use bitsy in that way”? If you can do it and want to do it then do it :p
