A hunter must hunt (monsters)

Inspired by a quick interaction on the introduction thread, here is my very first attempt at forum posting.

This is a thread for everything monster hunter, from discussions on the latest monster entries on wilds to tips on the oldschool titles.

Which monster hunter are you playing? Are you familiar with the series or curiously passing through? What’s your favorite monster, or your wildest lore theory?

By the order of the guild, you are now authorized to do some monster posting

So I’ll start with a wardrobe checkpoint

I’ve been having a lot of fun making different outfits for different weapons in wilds, probably one of my favorite aspects of the game

The layered armor system in Wilds is so great - the fashion hunting a cut above in this game. I got a picture tonight of me and my friends celebrating the Halloween event (mere seconds before getting rocked by Omega Planetes). I’m second from left with the hunting horn.

Ah, i see you are a person of culture as well

I’m also the hunting horn player on my friends party. Keeping them alive on omega planetes is more challenging than the monster itself

Which other MHs have you played? World definitely has the most hours for me because I had a really dedicated group, but I’ve put a lot of solo hours into Tri and 4U.

Tri has fan servers now and I have a post-single player character, but the grind to high rank online would take time and I don’t often play with randods.

I am almost done with 4U’s single player content - I never did the Dundorma quests my first playthrough. Hope to be done this year.

And I recently got the fan patch of Dos and the ability to play online, but I already have a bit of a full monster plate haha.

I’ve never played an MH I don’t like, even the PS2 games where you attack via right stick. I honestly have more of an affinity for the pre-world experience where you start with much less and the game starts much harder, but I’m very okay with the games becoming more accessible to newcomers.

I started with world, did the base game solo and played iceborne with friends, which made it also my most played. Played everything on rise with friends as well.

I lack discipline to stick to a single game, so i am halfway through 4 on the 3ds, generations ultimate on the switch, almost done on portable 3rd emulated on my retroid, and started freedom united but the cooking minigame crushed my soul. I played i little bit of 3U with friends via citra, but then wilds released and we kinda never got back to it.

I did get a iso for a fan patch of dos on the ps2, using buttons to attack (i admit i am afraid of the original control scheme), but haven’t burned it yet

I also like the loop of oldschool monhun a lot as well, i think portable 3rd might be my favorite of those, in no small part thanks to its impecable aesthetics

Do you remember how far you made it in 4U?

Also with a modded 3DS (or Citra) you can play 4U online via Pretendo’s online service.

I’m always perpetually picking at MHG on PS2 and MH Freedom on PSP.

I’m taking a break until G-Rank is added to Wilds but I really enjoyed base Wilds.

I started on MH3U, but never got past the Ceadeus - kept getting timed out. I got Rise but hated the wirebug movement so much I didn’t really get far, and I recently got World to play with friends, but then that plan evaporated so I just go solo lol.

Yeah I’m close to that - I think I’m about halfway through Dundorma. This will out me as a 4U noob but I swapped from low rank to high rank Testucabra armor as soon as I could lol. It just feels like such a solid foundation set. But now the damage is starting to outpace me

Yeah this is not my favorite “final boss” monster. I adore their design, the music, and the spectacle of the arena, but even with some really good gear they felt like a slog to fight (the fate of many giant final boss monsters and siege monsters unfortunately).

This has me remembering grinding out the Lagiacrus set in Tri though. That’s one of my favorite MH memories. I actually really like underwater hunting, and the Lagiacrus fight is my absolute favorite of the underwater hunts. Lagiacrus feels so terrifying in the water, but when they come on land you get this sense of “okay you’re on my turf now.” Unfortunately I feel like that’s all been lost with underwater hunting being abandoned - Lagi’s Generations and Wilds iterations are still cool but nowhere near as intimidating/satisfying imo.

ugh, my other least favorite part of Rise

I thought it was fine, I’ve heard some absolute vitriol about it but it just seemed like a neat gimmic that just got a bit tiring. I’d take it over the verticality of Rise and World any day, thought - thought I’m probably the weirdo for that lol

The lagi fight was the last thing me and my friends did on 3U before wilds released, and yeah it’s such an amazing fight

Tho i have to admit that i dont think i would like underwater combate as much if i was playing on my 3ds without right analog. On citra tho? It’s awesome.

Given the scope constraints i think they did a pretty decent job on it’s underwater segment in wilds. It’s not the real deal, but it does make for a unique fight in that game

What’s everyone’s go-to weapon? Like your “old faithful” of MH?

Mine’s always gonna be the switch axe, my beloved

I try to play different weapons every game, but my old faithful is the hunting horn, at least in modern monster hunter

There is nothing quite like stunning a monster, going up to its face and dancing and playing songs in front of it to really rub it in

And tho i do like doing solo horn, being aggressive support for a team is awesome

Same here. My first love was the Charge Blade, and I still think it’s cool, but I’ve played horn in every MH I can. I always try hammer and greatsword out too because I think they’ve always been solid, but I don’t really like ranged weapons until World.

I went hard on the bowguns in MH3U, but for World I’ve been flopping around between the Charge Axe and Dual Blades

Hunting Horn RULES. It’s so great that they took such a supportive weapon and made it absolutely viable for offense as well.

I’ve dropped off for a bit but I still have an unopened box for Rise. I’ve been playing since MHF2 and I don’t think I’m ever going to stop with this series.
