What game just make you think “Oh man this is awful” while playing? For any reason
Skyrim for me.
I generally don’t prefer medieval setting in games (or any media really), I vastly prefer contemporary or future. But I certainly can love the setting given the right work. I somehow avoided Skyrim until this fall but played a ton of Fallout 3 and New Vegas. It was on sale and I needed something to tide me over until Stalker 2 released on PS5, so I grabbed it and put a ton of hours into it. Well it turns out I really don’t like it. I did have to laugh at me being the “played 100 hours but I hated it” meme though.
It just felt… boring? And not deep? I mean I knew what I was getting into being a Bethesda open world but any time anything plot related my eyes glazed over and I just stopped caring. I got tired of being the chosen one and magically being the one woman who can solve everyone’s problems at the exact perfect time they needed me. Didn’t help that I walk into the first town and immediately I have a guy come up and be like “Hey I like this woman and this other guy does too but I deserve her please sabotage things” to me… like ok hello to you too, wtf? Having that happen in the first hour really tainted things. Basically every story beat that happened I just ignored it and rolled my eyes. I was having way more fun exploring random caves and dungeons and other nonsense. I also kinda hated that it seemed like everyone was hostile and I just had to kill everyone. Basically if I wasn’t in a town everyone was an enemy and it got tiring, like how does anyone even survive in this world where literally everyone is trying to kill you?
I understand it’s from 2011 and games have advanced a lot since but man just a year prior New Vegas happened and I felt like that world just felt so much better. And a few years later Witcher 3 came out and was a waaaaayyy better fantasy world that I not only spent hundreds of hours in but loved every second
The existence of this thread is funny, so I shall answer.
Mass Effect, I’m not sure I understand why this is so beloved, the gameplay is awful, feels super janky, you get stuck constantly, the graphics are ugly even for the time, the costume designs are awful with there being only a couple of passable armors, other than Wrex most of the characters aren’t particularly likeable or charismatic, the plot is not particularly interesting, the RPG mechanics are extremely shallow basically boiling just to number go up, the Mako while kinda fun to drive due to the jank quickly becomes obnoxious to drive due to the map designe and how often you need to climb absurdly steep mountains.
Basically there’s very little about this game to like I could keep going on stuff I don’t like, even my passion for lesbian romance was let down by how boring and uninteresting the Liara romance is and to to it off you get hit with the “Um atually, it’s not technically gay because all Asari are monogendered” which is super lame.
To be honest I’m not sure why I’ve chosen to play this for so long, I’m fairly deep in and at this rate it seems I’ll finish it despite clearly not liking it.
I could never get into Mass Effect either. The first game just felt like a dumbed down KOTOR with less interesting characters.
I’m sorry Bob, but I also think that KOTOR is awful, KOTOR 2 is interesting, but the writing on KOTOR1 is so boring and uninteresting.
Haha, that’s alright. I’m not the biggest KOTOR lover but I still prefer it over Mass Effect. Bit this is the hater thread, after all, and if you people knew what I thought about some of your favorite games…
Now I wanna know
I used to have Chibi Robo, it’s cute but you’re right, it was frustrating and annoying to play, I never bothered finishing it and I love the tiny perspective, I was a sucker for Re-Volt which is an RC-Car racer for example, really sad that the mom doesn’t divorce the deadbeat dad, since I never finished it I didn’t know that.
Tried FAST - Racing League on Wii after seeing people say for years it was a WiiWare game that brought F-Zero style gameplay to the Wii.
It doesn’t do that. Quite boring.
I was forced to play Mario Kort World and it was extremely boring. I even remember (but thats really like faint memory) original SNES game had more going for that time. Only played a few rounds with the nephews but its basically Sonic Allstar Racing minus the fun or feeling of speed. Also switch controllers feel super cheap.
I found Valis III for Sega Genesis in my parents’ basement and wow I actually wish I hadn’t found this. some of the worst platforming in any game I’ve ever played. A consistent issue I’m having is that in order to actually jump as high as possible, you need to hold up on the d-pad. Which doesn’t sound bad, but in practice, it’s genuinely miserable. Without the manual, it even took me a while to figure it out because the game constantly gives you jumps that LOOK like you could make it with the default neutral jump, but I swear are just a pixel or two short of actually being achievable, so I was constantly banging my head against the wall wondering what the hell I was doing wrong. There is also absolutely no coyote time.
You might be wondering to yourself, “well in that case, why not just always hold up on the d-pad?” and that almost would be fine, but holding up and hitting the attack button prompts your character to use magic (think like the sub-weapons in castlevania) instead of doing their regular attack. Also, in several parts of the game, there are moments where you need to in a split second go from ducking to holding up to jump as high as possible in order to dodge an attack or in one case to make a jump over a pit and it’s pretty dang difficult. I eventually ragequit on the ice level.
It’s a shame because overall the game has a strong concept with cute art and good music but it’s ruined by constantly forcing you to do jumps over pits of death. There was a moment pretty early on where you’re being ferried over a river by an old man, but partway through the man transforms into a serpent boss that you have to fight. That was pretty cool!
I hate overcooked
A game should not give my partner permission to yell at me
Evil, evil game
I took the family’s gamecube to my house last week, and I have tried but to no avail to finish ghost recon 2.
What I really hate about Skyrim (and this extends to all Bethesda games since FO3) is that it feels like being in a theme park. Which wouldn’t be so bad…but there’s no rides! Just a load of actors who constantly wink and nudge the player about things they couldn’t possibly know. It all feels extremely fake, like fantasy as written by a child.
Anyway my candidate is DotA. It took a great genre and turned it into a parody of itself, while somehow creating possibly the worst playerbase in gaming. Companies that had built their entire brand on RTS gave it up to chase this MOBA fad. We’ll never get that back!
I tried really hard to get into Luanti. The only game that feels even remotely stable or cohesive just feels like “Minecraft but bad.” Everything else with whatever combination of mods just feels broken. Not to mention I try to play with a Dwarf Fortress style caves mod that was supposed to be compatible with Minecraft-At-Home, but it stopped ores from spawning, rendering it worthless.
+1 for Mass Effect; I kept getting told how great it was, and wound up doing an entire Let’s Play series going through it as a way to give it a proper chance, but it never clicked.
For me, it was the corridors. An decent fraction of that game was spent walking through corridors (literal or otherwise) between the places where things happened, and once I first noticed it, I couldn’t stop. You could cut hours off that game by doing nothing but adjusting maps to remove empty corridors.
