I’ll report back after what I thought of it, but I think the last Paul Thomas Anderson film I saw was There Will Be Blood, which certainly was an film.
So… This was a weird movie. It’s long. Very long. Too long. Performances and all that stuff is great, though I can never see Leo Dicaprio as anyone but Leo Dicaprio no matter how hard he tries.
The thing is that the film is kinda disjointed. It’s part a Coen brothers-esque farce, and a pretty decent one at that, but then it has this blatant direct depiction of the modern American racist military police state and I’m like… Cool I guess but this is just what we see on the news every day. It doesn’t really mesh together all that well I find, and PTA indulges a little bit too much in some funky cinematography in moments where it absolutely doesn’t work.
Also fucking hell Sean Penn looks like absolute shit lol.
Dang! It looked interesting too. There’s so many movies I wanna see rn tho so I’m not sure if I will catch it…
I get the sense that the movie might hit quite different if you’re US-based. My main complain is that it’s just a bit too long for the story it’s trying to tell, and there’s a bit of a thematic copout at the very very end that left a bad taste in my mouth.
(I’m out of likes for the next 24 hours)
