Wanting to learn Sprite art for a game!

I started tinkering with RPG Maker and maybe other systems.

I have Aseprite, and wondered if anyone had some tips & tricks as I’m not a artist by any means!

I love pixel art but I’m not an expert

I would say using a limited palette is a great exercise and a great start

There’s a lot of tutorial and people showing their workflow

I would recommend Brandon James Greer YouTube’s channel !

Cure has a fantastic introduction to pixel art on Pixel Joint here, which is a really great way to learn about fundamentals and the technical terms you’ll hear people throwing about.

Note: for anyone in the UK like me you’ll just see a wall of “Content not available in your region” here as the images are hosted on Imgur who don’t allow UK users access thanks to the Online Safety Act, god I hate this country. This tutorial covers some of the same content

Pedro Medeiros (Celeste, Neverway) also has some superb tutorials available. There’s the 8 part beginner’s guide here, or if you’d just like a little inspiration the demos here are a great jumping-off point for new experiments :)

For some personal advice, I’d recommend downloading a bunch of palettes from Lospec and figuring out how to work within their constraints at various resolutions. Start with something relatively low resolution and low colour count - it’s faster to iterate on, but also really forces you to learn the medium. You might not want to work at 16x16 or 24x24 long term, but the lessons you get from working at that scale absolutely carry over!

Late to this thread but something I recommend doing is studying pixel art/spritework from indie games and retro games, you might learn some cool techniques. One I picked up on that I use a lot is having multicolored outlines, like, instead of having a black outline, or just a solid colored outline (if you use outlines at all), having a light part of an outline and a dark part of the outline makes a sprite look a lot higher quality.
