I love owning a Deck and to be honest with the way console gaming has been trending, the idea of a Linux gaming PC has been rattling around my head for a bit. So over the moon that Valve are releasing something that could potentially do for mainstream PC gaming what the Deck has done for handhelds.
Also hoping this means we’re closer to Half Life 3…
I’m someone who has never really experienced VR, so I’m (potentially) pretty excited for the Steam Frame, provided it’s within a manageable budget. I’m expecting it to cost a lot, but it could be a lot or it could be A Lot a lot…
As I said on BlueSky, I also think bringing SteamOS and Proton to ARM architecture is huge, this could lead to a boom of cheap handheld PCs that could run stuff like Hades or Balatro.
The Steam machine is cool, but doesn’t really seem to have a particular use case for me other than maybe we could sell our PS5 to get one.
This all looks amazing. Really inclined to disregard saving money and just buy these things :O
Very interested in how the machine performs in terms of thermals and noise, their design is very interesting with internal PSU and one big ass fan instead of tiny and loud stuff we get with laptops and the like.
can’t remember the last time I got excited about hardware
I really wish for the Frame to be affordable, I bought Quest 3 half a year ago as my first VR headset, but if selling this and using this money to get Frame will be viable option I will do it out of spite for Meta.
According to the Linus Tech Tips video on the Steam Machine, official word from Valve is that it’s going to be priced like a PC, not a console, so I expect a bit of sticker shock once that price is officially unveiled.
A friend of mine is super hyped about the Frame, but personally I’m not super big into VR.
I already do have a perfectly fine controller, so don’t see a need to get a new one.
Now the Steam Machine is probably eventually gonna land in my living room. Love its form factor, and the fact that it’s powerful enough to run more modern games which my current living room PC can’t.
Then I can reuse my current living room PC, which sticks out like a sore thumb currently even with its IPX case, as a server in my work room or something.
No idea when it’s going to be available, but I’m in no rush.
so I’m super duper hyped for the Frame but god knows I ain’t gonna be able to afford it when it drops. in the meantime however… who’s trying to do VR multiplayer in general? I’m looking for an excuse to do UEVR mods on PC. and god knows I can’t keep going into the Zuckerverse (Worlds, btw) on Quest 3S standalone the way I have been the last year: the audience is lowkey rotten and with the unfortunate passing away of several VR homies I have very little reason to keep going back just to shut down late night transphobes.
I think the new Steam Controller is an abomination, and I say that as someone who loves the original Steam Controller.
I don’t understand how Steam can keep making things look so uncomfortable. Nowadays, I don’t have a Steam Deck primarily because of lack of funds, but for years I was on the fence because the controls looked uncomfortable. I think I finally held one last year and it was fine, but I wish they’d stop making me question their decisions.
i think its because they’re primarily engineers so value function and ergonomics over style. as someone with massive hands, i’m endlessly thankful the steam deck is one of the most comfortable handhelds i’ve ever used.
