TTRPG — General Recruitment

Intent:

Since there were some voices on trialing to have a general recruitment thread I’m hereby attempting to run one. My personal intent is to offer a safe and low-barrier space for people to look for players, active groups, GMs and things I haven’t thought of yet.

Of course, be aware that this is still the internet and we’re all a bunch of strangers with different cultural backgrounds and values so there might always be some friction.

Please bear with me as we work together to iron out any kinks and issues, I’m completely open to suggestions in replies, DMs and any other means (I’m Nora Envy in the underscore discord)

Template

I’m aware there’s a lot of different playstyles and interests, I’m trying to make a template that covers as much as possible but isn’t too big and cumbersome either. But I came up with a template that hopefully isn't too overwhelming to fill in and still covers most important information to have ahead of time.

- Looking for: [Player(s), game, GM, other]
- Timezone: [Preferably use the build-in time system as these auto-convert to give an area of time in the middle you’d be available.]
- System: [System, genre, or exclusions] (for instance, ”anything but 5e”)
- Frequency: [Weekly, Monthly, whenever we manage, not applicable][3hrs, 6hrs, 12hrs]
- Length: [Campaign, a year, a premade campaign, one-shots]
- Medium: [No preference, VTT(roll 20, foundry, tabletop-simulator), play-by-post (discord, forum, etc), not applicable]
- Group Size: [3-4, 5-8, mostly for GMs but players are also free to not want too large a group]
- Experience: [new, decent chunk of time, never played 5e]
- About me: [Describe what you’re looking for and specifically not looking for, are you a fan of RP, do you just want nothing but dice-rolling combat or want something in between? What are your interests and what, if applicable, are you unsure about.]

- Medium: Foundry with voice on Discord or TeamSpeak
- Group Size: 3-4
- Experience: As GM, none. As player a few years in a lot of different systems.
- About me: Since I’m new to GMing I’m looking for people willing to give me feedback, but also willing to give me space to learn and mess up to grow.

Example #2

- System: Something Fantasy

- Length: up for anything
- Medium: anything but play-by-post
- Group Size: small
- Experience: none
- About me: I’m new to this and always been interested to try but I’ve been a little uncertain to jump into this, but with a small group I’d feel safe to try.

Forming

Since we’re posting on a forum I presume everyone knows how to contact others and plan things out. Share contact information, make sure there’s no instant red-flags with regards to game content, values, and requirements. Get everyone in contact, plan times/dates.

Starting

I know that practically everyone in my other TTRPG thread is an experienced player and won’t need most information in here. I do however find it important to not let new players go into anything under-prepared and possibly even ruin their enjoyment so badly they’ll never touch TTRPGs again.

A session zero is standard and in this the GM will go over many topics for the group, the game(s) and everything else relevant. This is to make sure everyone is on the same wave-length, knows what they’re getting into, what boundaries everyone has, and what is acceptable / unacceptable. And gives players the time and place to ask questions about any relevant topic. No matter what system you end up playing, everyone’s enjoyment matters and this includes the GM (if you have one, of course.)

Be sure you feel safe and happy going forward, as the age old saying goes: ”No DnD
is better than bad DnD”

Other

I know this might be a little bit more then truly necessary, but I want to make a big thing like this as welcoming as possible, it’s a hobby I enjoy and I’d feel awful if people are scared off due to me not adding a lot of text.

Alien Bob also mentioned being able to turn on the calendar feature to try around with, but I felt that for this thread that may have been a bit too much. Depending on the reaction to this I am willing to trial something for that, as having a calendar set-up with people willing to host one-shots and the likes, with free sign-ups build into the forum sounds pretty cool to me as well.
