The Underscore Jam #1: Triple Triptych RESULTS

Today is the day! The clock has hit zero, people have submitted what they have submitted, let’s take a look and praise everyone’s work! If you feel like you missed out, fear not! The main thread will stay open for a couple more days so you can enter a late submission, and I will add it to this post. Thanks to everyone for joining in and/or spreading the jam around the internet. I had a great time making my entry and I learned some lessons about hosting a jam that I will take with me to the next one, which should happen somewhere in January. Until then, let’s look at what we all accomplished this round:

The prompt was: Make a 3x3 triple triptych that tells a story readable in all directions.

The constraints were: Total resolution is 192x192, with each panel being 64x64. Use an 8 color palette. Images should be upscaled to 768x768 for the final product.

In total we got 11 submissions. Some of them were a little, let’s say, playful with the prompt and constraint and we love that! Everyone gets an A+, 10/10, and 5 stars!

The Submissions

@rpwtf came in early with some gadget nostalgia. I really enjoy that it takes you on both a journey through time and through input/output media.

@Meow gives us some scenes of emotion. Very open to interpretation and in that I can definitely project some of my own life experiences.

@Cultpacitor shares with us something that uses lighting, structures, and has a delightful use of borders.

@AlienBob, that’s me, faces the world. As you can tell, I loved making this enough that I based my new profile pic on one of the panels.

@plut0 went all out and created an entirely interactive entry. The story it tells, in any direction, that’s yours.

@Lady_Data got real symbolic with it. Horrifying, but also curiosity inducing.

@Fluff saw boxes and thought about boxes and the kitties who find them irresistable.

@nika has a way with words and added a distressed look that’s really accentuated by big crunchy pixels.

@CalDoesThings forgot about the resolution constraint and damn if that didn’t lead to something that looks great!

@Deino lets the grid be merely an implication and it is magnificent.

@SeeroftheNight reminds us that we are not immune to Gupaganda!

@adriendittrick claims this is unfinished because it was meant to be interactive, but I think you’ll agree with me that that black void is very compelling.

That’s it for the first Underscore Jam! As I said, I’ll add any submissions that still come in over the next few days to the list. Thanks so much to all the participants, to everyone who inspired and helped in doing this, and to everyone who shared the jam! To those of you who had trouble participating, worry not, because the whole idea is that every jam is different and will pose new and interesting challenges.

Remember that you can select and quote an image to automatically put it into your reply, and that you can do this with multiple images/quotes.

yeaaaahhh, I love all the entries, so much variety and intersting stuff. I think I especially love @Fluff carboard and cats, and the mystique of @adriendittrick unfinished world (also the concept is very smart and, once again, makes me want to go make video games)

And @SeeroftheNight gave me a big smile, but that’s easy when you make fanart of your own incredible and bittersweet comic :)
