Spooky Season

Hey, I like playing horror and adjacent games this time of year, and by that, typically between now and the end of the year. Right now, three that I’m playing that qualify are Spooky Express, White Day: A Labyrinth Named School, and Inmost. What are you playing for spooks and creeps?

I’m thinking about booting Phantasmagoria for the first time in over a year, seems to have the perfect spooky vibes I’m looking for.

I downloaded The Casting of Frank Stone off Gamepass last night. Opening chapter is pretty good but it’s been mostly boring since then. I’m about halfway through.

I convinced some friends to play the first retail Killing Floor in all it’s glory. It became a slog with just me and one other vet player carrying us through on normal, but I think everyone was interested in the vibes it had. Been tinkering with making a private server with some old tech I have on me, just going a little slow with it between deciding which os I wanted to use for it and reading up on docs for the game itself. I am forever amused that ? is the delimiter between commands. Not something like % or $, a ?.

I played Silent Hill 2 for the first time this month. Instantly understood why it’s held up as such a classic, what a game. Not only does it have some incredible storytelling, but also I thought pretty much every area in the game was great, from the tense walk into town through to the end.

That game is so great, and I haven’t played it in way too long but those vibes are just great it’s spooky and gory but in no shape terrifying.

I don’t do well with horror and since Halloween has never been a thing in my life I never felt the need to play anything spooky on purpose during this time. But the most fun I’ve had with scary stuff has been Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light the constant fear and struggle of that is on another level and I’d love to replay through it at some point but I’d have to be on a call with someone and stream it because I just couldn’t solo it again.

I also really enjoyed HL:Alyx, even though I couldn’t finish it until I had a friend on a discord call while streaming my game to him. It being VR just makes things that aren’t that scary so much worse, with the wildest experience to me requiring some explanation.
At the time I was living in a large apartment on the 4th floor with large windows, it was summer at the time and the windows were open wide. In the game, I opened a door and hear some wind sound, with exactly at that time a gust of wind blowing straight at me in the real world. That level of immersion is such a wild experience and made that game so much more terrifying then the content would have you presume.

Also headcrabs jumping at you, while you need to reload a weapon that you’re untrained for and just struggle to mash the shells in the tube, then point and fire, to only hear fuck all because you didn’t cock it? Nothing in my life has ever come close to that level of dread and fear.

I guess Warframe 1999 might count with its ‘techrot’ analogue horror stuff? Seeing a mishmash of biomass and CRT monitors loping toward you is certainly spooky enough, aha.

Completely forgot about playing a horror game for halloween. I guess there is still time

I did finish the original fatal frame recently, such a deeply scary game. And spooking the living shit out of me wasn’t enough, it also had to judge how well i performed. Rude

I played Gorgon’s Garden yesterday where you can scroll a fake forum from 2008. I got stuck on a

If I remember correctly Orbo’s Odyssey by the same dev have some spooky vibes too, and the 3D platformer controls are so chaotic… I have a clearer memory of one scary scene in the sequel demo.

This year I really enjoyed Crossroad OS and CARIMARA, both are short games (1-2h) and completely different.

For what I will play, I recently bought The Cabin Factory, I never heard of it before someone mentionned it on Bluesky and the trailer made me want more !

My two favorite horror games of this year are currently: Mouthwashing and Cooking Companions.

Normally I’m pretty desensitized to horror, but both games made me recoil at some parts and gave my stomach turn. Especially Cooking Companions.

So rude. Tbf, I found the first Fatal Frame both scary and also truly difficult. Not enough healing items around the Himuro Mansion!

Yeah

I had to start from scratch after getting basically softlocked on my first attempt for not having enough healing itens and camera rolls in the later chapters

Rocking with Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare, boy does it make me want something like Hunt Showdown but singleplayer

so i did mouthwashing and silent hill f this year (both good, but man f was like old school trilogy level good for me), but opened the season with the pce-cd translation of dead of the brain, and i had such a good time with it that i was legit disappointed to find

a) it’s only chapter 1 that’s currently done (for which i’m grateful to the scene!) and

b) remember when PCEs popularity meant not necessarily seeing horrendous TG16 prices? haha oh man this ones through the roof

but none of that should mess with folks wanting a cool spooky adventure game, that doesn’t overstay its welcome but does go balls crazy in the final hours!
