Spider Thread

Spiders are cool but do you think they are tasty?

Personally I’ve never tried them but Tarantula tacos are totally a thing that people really eat, so are scorpion tacos which I guess technically aren’t spiders but they are arachnids so I figured they were worth a mention.

No pictures included since I figured fans of spiders might not want to see dead spiders.

I’ve never tried spiders - much as I love them I try to avoid physical contact with them as much as possible, so honestly not sure I could!

I have tried crickets though, and can confirm they’re pretty good. Would be interesting to see if there’s a flavour difference between arachnids and insects!

I live in Australia, spiders are so commonplace over here all times of the year that we don’t even take notice of them any more

We pretty routinely get huntsman spiders as big as a dinner plate just casually chilling in the corners of our rooms. But they’re chill and they eat the flies and mozzies so we keep em around.

The more nasty ones like Redbacks and funnel webs can fuck right off though. We either evict them with extreme prejudice or if that’s too risky kill them on sight.

Made the mistake of looking up images of huntsman spiders from Australia and wow - I keep plenty of cellar spiders around to deal with house pests, but something that huge might be a push too far for me no matter how helpful!

Funnel webs sound legitimately terrifying, no idea how you cope with those fuckers about

Reviving this thread because I like spiders

This lil guy was hanging out in my hair the other day. I think it’s a crab spider

Excellent spider! Love the change in pigmentation across the length of the leg

This little critter came bowling along at me while I was sat on this wall doing a little watercolour sketch of the tower of Newcastle Civic Centre, so I got up and grabbed a photo of it. I think it’s a crab spider of some sort.

Giant House Spider season in the UK is typically around August to October, but we’ve had an record-breaking heatwave this May, which seems to have brought them out earlier.

Photo doesn’t quite do this one justice: I’d put her legspan at a little under 3 inches, abdomen maybe the width of a biro?

I think this is a female, as they have much larger bodies than the males and the enlarged pedipalps you generally see in males were absent - any spider experts reading please feel free to correct me though! If I’m right I think this might actually be the first female I’ve seen, as they generally hide in dark places whilst the males roam to find a mate.

Absolutely fascinating to watch but good fucking god it was terrifying when it moved. After I took this photo I looked away for a second to check I’d got it properly in frame and when I looked back it was gone; I nearly died right there and then.

oh my god it’s a baby!

I think this is still a Giant House Spider (see how the colouration and markings match those of the previous photo?), but unlike the truly colossal creature from yesterday this one is clearly a juvenile at barely a centimeter in legspan; altogether less terrifying. At a guess it’ll grow to be a male - there’s no enlarged pedipalps, but proportions look much more in line with those of the males - but as usual I absolutely have no idea what I’m talking about so there’s every chance I could be completely wrong lol

Also please forgive the dust and cobwebs, I know I need to clean but I don’t want to disturb my little 8-legged friends

holy fuck another one?

I live by the river so I get a lot of bugs, but 3 of these on consecutive days is completely unheard of - even in peak spider season I’ll typically only see around one per week!

The photo makes it look similar to yesterday, but doesn’t do it justice - this one is comfortably more than twice the legspan, I’d guess 3-4cm this time. Definitely a male here, with chunky pedipalps. I’d have loved to get a few more photos from some different angles but he was restless, took a while to just get this!
