I like talking about TTRPGs, so this is my excuse.

I wish I could GM in person but there’s a language barrier I have to overcome unfortunately. I moved from the USA to CZ (for obvious reasons) to be with my wife but that’s left me with not knowing the language and having a hard time finding English speaking TTRPG players near me or in my timezone. I WILL PLAY SONGBIRDS 3e IF IT KILLS ME!

I’m always having to restrain myself when it comes to D&D’s monopoly on TTRPGs. it’s a real sore point for me because Indie Roleplaying games are such a different world and so creative and diverse. D&D is the Fed.

EDIT: But i am well aware that this is unfair on people who like it and only hate the game, not the player

saaaaame D&D hater here. especially as someone from europe, it’s impressive to see how much ttrpg = D&D for americans. Like, people call themselves DUNGEON masters, that’s wild to me ahah. I saw so much instagram reels and reddit posts of people trying to bend D&D into more expressive and creative stories, asking the daring question: what if it wasn’t in a dungeon?

And the game is so rules heavy, but not in a narrative way at all. It was a wargame after all. And it’s racist too but that’s for another time ahah

I’m a bit bitter but eh, it’s only fair seeing the monopoly it has on people minds. But like you said, it’s unfair to the players who do super creative stuff with it. I just think they could do more playing other games.

btw all of this thread make me want to find a way to play some form of TTRPG together…

Honestly you could probably make a general LFG thread and have a post about your game up. Or just a general thread that’s an ongoing thread of session wrap up notes but IDK what rules thats gonna fall under if any.

I have never done one, but a play by post like they did on these things called foe.. fort.. for-uhms? seem like a shoe-in answer. /j

A LFG thread would definitely be possible, and rule wise so far there’s been a bit of a “Just do what feels right and if it ends up not being neat we’ll change it around then” so no reason to feel too much pressure on getting perfection.

I think the most different system i dm was castle falkenstein, where you play cards instead of dice

Didn’t mention before, but i am, slowly, trying to make a system with a friend. It’s going to be a action movie/modern assassins rpg, based a lot on the john wick series

maybe we’ll make a TTRPG Game Design thread soon too…

Sometimes all you need is 2d6 and some solid ideas of what happens when a player fails or gets hit. Even progression is negotiable depending on how you want to run things! (I actually kind of like Mork Borg’s idea of rolling under/over)

I’ve been running a Daggerheart campaign and it’s probably one of my favorite systems to run in, it’s so fun and easy to just go with things. Another one I enjoyed is Mecha Hack. I tried Lancer and it’s very cool, but playing it felt kind of whatever for me. Not sure if it was the pre-made adventure or just how the combat worked. I think I just prefer combat being a little more freeform?

I liked Daggerheart’s premise but the card based stat tracking was meh for me. Too fiddly for me. But Mecha Hack? This is the first time I’ve encountered a Black Hack player in the wild! It’s a great system and Mecha Hack looks good!

Mecha Hack is pretty good, and unsurprisingly very hackable. I ran gundam with it to pretty good success.

How do people here feel about Blades in the Dark?

I’ve never played it but there’s a thousand games that take so much from it now, so I’ve played it by osmosis almost!

Never played it but had a look at it’s rules and it’s definitely on the to run list. I’d need buy in from players but I’ll just have an LFG for it!

I have been dabbling a little in setting up a general recruitment thread on here, but since my internet stopped 24hrs earlier then I expected.. that’s a future me’s problem. I’ve also been unsure of what to include and what not to include. As I also want to make sure it’s not too overwhelming for new folks either, and not lacking in important information.

i guess a thread is not the best format for that given it reverts to most recent post?

Perhaps this forum has Doodle integration or some other scheduling system

I don’t know if it’s sufficient for this, but Discourse does have a calendar and events plugin installed by default, though I have it disabled right now.

I found that it also has a time feature so there’s no frustrating converting PST GMT CET and those kinda abbrivations into a human readable form. In my eyes, at least to form groups a forum isn’t too bad, as long as posters are cool and edit their post when the situation changes. Though I do agree it would be cool for people running shorter stuff that it’d be really nice that someone could plan something and just sign-up on a calendar if it seems neat.

So my internet being down means I can continue learning how to best use discourse and improve the thread idea.

I mean the quick and dirty way would be for a thread for LFGs specifically and updating your post for a specific game every time a seat gets closed with your expected first session. That or it could be wholly devoted to your campaign and the first post is for an LFG though this would create a few DOA threads. Calendars could be great though sounds like a backend headache.
