Hospitality Workers Support Thread

Not sure if this is off topic for this forum, but figured since this site is full of creative people it’s quite likely that I’m not the only person working a food service job to make ends meet!

This thread is a safe space to share horror stories about terrible customers, complain about long hours or share latte art/plating/cocktails - anything goes :)

To get things started here’s a couple of bits of latte art I was quite happy with:

I don’t work in the hospitality industries, but I appreciate all of you who do. You make my life better and easier every day.

“Hospitality” is an interesting way of describing Customer Service jobs, I might have to use that one more.

I work in retail, so I definitely feel you on the terrible customers, long hours, etc. Currently working over 40 hours this week despite being part time, and that’s not even counting unpaid commute time or meal breaks. I typically spend close to if not over 40 hours a week on my job anyway if you count those….

>40 hours is definitely not what I’d describe as part time - good luck, hope it’s not too awful for you!

Hospitality workers is a pretty common way to phrase it here (North of England), but I’ve always liked that it makes me sound much more fancy :)

PSA: if you order a wet latte/no foam latte and your barista’s face falls it’s not a judgement on your taste - everyone has different preferences and that’s ok! - it’s just that we know that the steam wand is about to make the most awful noise you’ve ever heard and possibly rupture eardrums within a 100m radius and our hearts are filled with dread

Had a day off today! Feels weird, honestly, maybe I should try having a few more and see how I go

Here’s a tulip from ages ago - we used to have competitions to see how many stacks we could pour, clearly I was very out of practice with this one

Never had a food service job, but I was raised by a former waitress and was always taught to pack up the dishes as a result.
If there’s space I sometimes carry them up to the counter too, but I’m not sure if that’s always convenient for staff?

Somebody let me know what the etiquette around that is

Can only speak for myself, but anyone going out of their way to make my life easier is appreciated - thank you!

So far as taking things to the counter - 90% of the time it’s great, although if we’re slammed it can sometimes be a little inconvenient. Even then the gesture is appreciated though :)

Just got a horribly nasty review from a customer that basically amounted to the fact that I got noticeably upset after said customer was repeatedly rude to me.

And of course that’s always how it happens. They’re allowed to treat you like shit but the moment you even react as though they just insulted you to your face, bam, negative review.

So sorry that happened to you, sounds absolutely awful - can never understand the complete lack of empathy and self-awareness someone must have to treat someone that way. Hope you’re doing ok

Doing fine, thank you. Thankfully, stuff like that seems to happen less often where I work than what I sometimes hear from people online, but it’s still frustrating nonetheless.

I’m starting to toss some applications around so maybe hopefully soon I can get a proper post-college job.

Some tips and tricks if you want to make your barista and fellow customers sad:

  • start asking me questions whilst another customer is ordering
  • walk off half way through placing your order to look at a display in another part of the cafe ignoring the queue behind you
  • change your mind and ask for your order to be takeaway after we’ve already prepared all the drinks and food

If you can’t tell I had a rough day lol, here is a very moody rosetta to match the vibe
