I’m watching a friend play through the ps2 Katamari and am enjoying watching the player’s dad just moan about how boring it was to watch and how he constantly talks down to you. It kind of makes me miss games that would actually be willing to talk to players like that instead of either nearly clinical tutorials or overly friendly ones.
In Spiderman for the PS2, they got Bruce Campell in to voice the tutorial. I had no idea who that was back then, but it was funny and sarcastic and he ate a sandwich during recording.
Then in the sequel, which had far more tutorial lines, they got him back to eat another sandwich!
Along those same lines, SHODAN from System Shock has some amazing zingers.
”You are an excellent specimen of a pathetic species.” is such an amazingly underhanded comment and the way she delivers it makes me shudder every time.
Ratchet and Clank, particularly the first one on PS2, have incredibly sassy characters. They’re not necessarily sassy to the player but the attitudes of everyone in-game have mad sass.
I’ll always love Falco’s unwarranted sassiness in Star Fox 64, which is made all the better by the moments of genuine care/friendship he shows. Star Fox 64 has always felt like a Saturday morning cartoon come to life for me.
