Dis(c)k Pile

Let’s see your disc/k piles and hauls! :computer_disk: :floppy_disk: Mine tend to be a mix of music, games, and old software, so this topic didn’t neatly fit into either of the more specific categories.

Here’s what I brought home from a recent thrift run:

games

  • Justin Boots Extreme Rodeo
  • Orbits 3.0 Voyage Through the Solar System
  • Kreative Komix Comic Book Maker U.S. History
  • The Incredible Machine ver. 3.0

warez

  • ClickArt Fonts 15,000 Fonts, Alphabet, and Headline Images from Broderbund
  • Smart Saver ClickArt 10,000 w/ obligatory free trial of AOL
  • Print Artist ver. 22 “Platinum Edition”

music

  • chiplust - chiptunes to make you chipswoon
  • Juanita the Spanish lobster w/ London philharmonic
  • Binky Griptite’s ghetto funk power hour
  • Bambir Quake - avant garde Armenian folk music

My broader collection of old software and weird media is scattered across various storage, so I’ll try to share bits of it as they’re unpacked and recollected

I need to go thrifting so bad. There’s treasures out there that some people think are trash!

Bonus Pinball CD I picked up last week and forgot about. I was going to dig out a couple old boxes to boot some of these up but I’m thinking I’ll setup some PC emu instead for simplicity and easier testing across different versions of Windows.

I no longer have my pile of 3.5" floppy disks; sometime in the 2010’s, Capy Games was doing a joint booth with Double Fine at PAX and selling a bundle of both studios’ full libraries to date. They also included a brand new game, a kart racer featuring characters from both companies, on 3.5" floppies on the package. Those disks came from folks like me who donated them to Capy for that project.

I have a few packages of mystery CD-ROMs arriving tomorrow :star_struck: Looking forward to unpacking and sharing what’s inside.

Update on the mystery CDRs here:

  • The Napster disc is actually blank. I’m just going to hold onto this as a relic from a very particular weird point in interwebs history
  • Both the unlabeled ones turned out to be dance recital photos - one from the local community college, c2008; the other without much identifying info c2013
  • The one labeled “For Anne + John” is an improperly-formatted music disc with a cue index for 3 tracks and no data within any of the tracks. The track areas are totally empty :sob: so this one is effectively a drink coaster

Finally went thrifting and hit the jackpot

Only annoying thing is this charity shop’s paper label stickers leave tons of residue on jewel case plastic.
