Devlog - Morrowind - it's bin day in Seyda Neen

It bin day in Seyda Neen… oh no it’s BIN DAY in Seyda Neen! I think I forgot to put my bin out, and today is bin day!

I’ve taken a huge break from game dev, moving country took up so much of my energy, and now it’s almost 5 years later. To ease back into game dev I’m making a little mod for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. I decided to make this post to detail my goals and progress with this mod, in hope to get it finished quicker, it shouldn’t be a very large project (but I’m a master of scope creep.)

Summary

A little comedy mod for Morrowind, whereby on certain days in the Elder Scrolls calendar it’s bin day, specifically in the starting village of Seyda Neen. This was partly inspired by the McDonalads in Balmora mod from a couple of years ago, I wanted to make something mundane from our world and integrate it into Morrowind.

While learning how to do this I realised that while resources on Morrowind modding are plenty, the instructions for how everything fitted together are certainly lacking. A concise beginning to end tutorial for taking a mesh from Blender and getting it into Morrowind was non-existent, you needed to combine quite a lot of knowledge together. So as part of this project I also want to make my own short tutorial on how to do this.

Project Goals

  • A mod featuring:
    • Finished wheelie bin modeled and textured in Blender
    • Bin day schedule in Seyda Neen, bins are only out on certain calendar days
    • Bin day dialog for NPCs in Seyda Neen
    • Small quest involving bin day, with some relevant politics to fit into Morrowind’s world
  • A YouTube Tutorial taking a Blender model into a Morrowind Mod
    • Shouldn’t be much longer than 15 minutes
    • Complete with all dependencies so inexperienced modders can follow along easily

Dev Log #1

So far my progress is good, I have managed to figure out a lot of core basics I need to get this mod working. I made a quick and dirty model, managed to convert it to the “nif” file format and import it into the game as a container, just like an in-game chest.

Of course I put all my money in the bin!

You can see the wheelie bin, is, well, not looking too great. This is my next goal, my blender abilities are very limited, so I need to get practicing! Fortunately I think a low-poly wheelie bin is a good project for a Blender beginner such as myself.

That’s all for now! I’m going to try and update this weekly. :)

This might convince me to play morrowind

There has never been a better time to play it actually, there’s a fanmade rewrite of the entire engine that doesn’t crash all the time like the old one

Yeah OpenMW is a fantastic project, and it’s coming along great! My mod should be compatible with it. :)

Devlog #2

I told you I was a master of scope creep, right?

Well, perhaps the scope is not quite creeping yet, but I’m definitely making it more complicated for myself.

I have decided I don’t want to make a modern day wheelie bin for my mod, but a more fantasy style one instead. I’ve thought about it a lot, and I think it adds to the comedy. I want my mod to be comedic, but not for itself to actually be a joke, at least not entirely.

So this means I’m going to make a wooden wheelie bin that fits in a bit more, this also means I trying to figure out where the wood for such a bin would be supplied for Seyda Neen.

The obvious solution is to find nearby trees:

I was hoping that upon finding this model, it might tell me what tree it was, but no…

At first I thought the “bc“ stood for basic, but after some research it seems to stand for Bitter Coast, which makes a lot more sense. Unfortunately it doesn’t give me any info as to what kind of tree it could be. Ultimately it doesn’t matter what kind of tree it is, but I would love to find a model of a cross section or something, to see what it might look like if it was made into planks.

Either way it seems like I can’t be too fussy, so I turned to Imperial prison ship the player arrives on:

This has some nice textures, perfect for my bin. Although it doesn’t quite make sense, while the port is guarded by the Imperials it’s governed by House Hlaalu. Who are likely the ones in charge of rubbish collection. Maybe I should take a look around Balmora instead?

Okay I’m getting ahead of myself… I can still make the basic structure of the wheelie bin and texture it later. Next time, I’ll actually have a model to show you I swear!

Also I found this great Khajit texture…
