Cool Features of Failed Consoles

The Neo Geo Pocket may not have sold well, but the built-in horoscopes are so fucking cool (even though I normally don’t care about horoscopes)

And the fact that it had a built-in clock, alarm, and calendar really drives me insane. I really wish this darling little handheld had taken off.

I honestly loved the second screen experience with the Wii U…

Wii-U, my beloved. The Wii-U was such an underappreciated gem that everyone loves to shit on :face_with_steam_from_nose:

I’m kind of a sucker for the back touchpad of my PS Vita lmao. It’s just fun having different control layouts like that

That shit is SO RAD. I’ve always loved how Sony toys around with touch pads like on the Vita and PS4/5 controllers!

The VMU being a precursor to second screen information was always rad. I always wanted to see more games take advantage of taking it out on the go. Like a gigapet raising mini game for leveling up characters in an RPG.

My Virtual Boy had dual d-pads before dual analog existed.

The VMU was such a cool and unique idea! Got your health meter in CVX, raising Chao in Sonic, or the cool minigames from Power Stone

The PSP had a robust RSS Reader that made it a great podcast machine. It could sync and download podcasts without needing to interface with a second device like a PC. I used my PSP 3000 and later my PSPgo as my main podcast listening devices.

The Promise of the Ouya was a good promise, damnit. A low-powered but standardized Android home console intended for smaller and indie developers? Fuck yes! If the hardware and distribution model hadn’t been fumbled so hard, it could have been great.

The annoying thing looking back on the VMU and the Wii U Gamepad is now everybody carries around a portable screen device in their pocket but there are barely any games that take advantage of this fact.

Not a failed console but maybe a failed feature? I think the IR port on Game Boy Color should’ve been used more.

Yes, yes and yes
Love to see Vita being mentioned before I got here.
As a mainly PC player I have some unexplained love for this console, and will never forgive Sony for treating it like a kind of an unwanted child. It had so much potential and could achieve more than PSP ever did imo if it was supported properly.

Did any games use this? I totally forgot it had one

Oh yeah, tons

Can’t believe I didn’t use it more for these games :face_with_crossed_out_eyes:

Vita was the first and only console I bought at launch. I loved the little fucker. Mine has a bum battery, I really should replace it and turn it into an emulation console.

I was weirdly fascinated by those pictures as a kid in Super Mario Bros Deluxe. More games should have two Game Boy kissing

The issue with the Vita is not really that Sony didn’t cultivate it, they just didn’t cultivate it in the US nor Europe.

Vita did fine in Japan and, if Sony leaned it, could’ve been the perfect companion for the PS4. Ah well, I still love mine

it’s the same old story with sony, they try and push proprietary formats, provide awful pc software and lose interest immediately when it isn’t a smash hit. they did the same with their vr headsets and i don’t trust them with anything that isn’t their main platform.

i do love the vita, as flawed as it is, but going for the premium console experience on the go and acting surprised when it flourishes as a handheld and indie platform was a lethal mistake.

the switch and steam deck has overtaken it in terms of being my go to for indie games but its still a lovely form factor. cfw has helped make it less frustrating but my god i wish there was a modern vita that got rid of all the dumb idiosyncrasies.

They have been so close TWICE to having a banger portable retro device but Sony never sticks the landing.

I wish I had the time or wherewithal to use my PSVR2. It’s a cool piece of tech but I don’t like how Beat Saber feels compared to PSVR1. Something about it has always felt off.
