Weird and Interesting Controllers

KITTY!

Saitek PC Dash. Finally, they invented something to replace those mindboggling keyboards and simplify game controls. Just slide in the games overlay, swipe to scan it’s barcode and you’re all ready to game without a keyboard, but on a key… pad. There’s even an overlay for Microsoft Word!

not a game controller but this reminded me of questron, i used to have a couple of books and as a small kid i thought it was magic. it was an infrared pen, really neat for the 80s.

This is so wild with the ripped-off comix zone artwork (a SEGA IP never on PS1) alongside bothering to declare the Sony trademarks :sob:

Thrustmaster Run n Drive. Has a rotating analog wheel that they suggest to use for steering or sniper zooming. It has long sexy legs, two back buttons you can rebind and works on PC, PS2 and PS3.

That’s another thrustmaster that’s been on my list for a while

Oh speaking of Thrustmaster, we got a Nintendo 64 “Thrustmaster Stingray” controller at a thrift store which at first glance looks pretty normal…

However, the stick is removeable, for some reason.

Maybe it came with other sticks you could put in there? Which could be kind of neat I guess but mostly it just sucks because since the stick isn’t actually attached to the controller it tends to spin around in place making it SUPER easy to slip your thumb off of it, and in general just making it horrible to use.

It also has the most disgusting soft plastic(?) on the back, it feels nasty and gets little bits of hair and fuzz stuck to it. All around miserable controller, could not recommend it less.

That metallic green paint job is pretty boss though

I found pictures of the box and it doesn’t mention anything about changable sticks so I think yours might just be busted.

I hate that sticky material! Thankfully not too many controllers have it.

The strangest controller I own is the DanceDrum, a controller made during the peak of Dance Dance Revolution. It’s too tiny to put your feet on, it’s meant to be put on the floor and you use drumsticks to hit the arrows. It is one of the more unique peripherals that came out during that craze, and I could see it being a way for people to play the dance games that were flooding the market if they could not use their legs.

Here’s a video of me playing on one from 11 years ago.

This looks really fun, gonna track one down.

Competition Pro PS 11. It sucks, the face buttons are flush with the shell so you have to press into it to use them. But… it is also for playing audio CDs!

What. A whole thread full of bizzarro controllers and it’s the “for playing audio cds” that makes me confused as hell. How does it work?

All it means is that you can navigate the PS1’s CD player with it, just like any other controller. I thought that’s a very funny thing to put on the front of the box.

Just remembered another “weird” one I had growing up:

The Gravis GamePad Pro was basically a knockoff PS1 controller for the PC. That hole in the middle of the d-pad allowed you to screw in a little plastic joystick to make it an “analog stick”, though we must’ve lost this piece because I don’t remember ever having it or using it. My only other memory of it was how incredibly stiff and clunky the buttons felt, and the only game I ever played with it was the PC port of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, which was equally stiff and clunky.
