THEME HOSPITAL FANS RISE UP
Hey I worked on Barkley 2!
Decided to do it for real this time. Gave myself some challenges:
-
No substituting genres (even though we were told we could).
-
No repeats
-
No tabletop sim.
The only one I couldn’t answer was Visual Novel, because I can’t think of one I’ve played and liked. Also a Katamari game is up there because, even tho it’s a franchise, there are no games outside of that franchise like it.
Aw yess Steamworld Dig, I love the Steamworld games.
Actually, Katamari Damacy is a sequel to another Namco classic.
It’s Pac-Man with better graphics. /half-joke
You’re telling me a hill silenced this?
switched quite a few genres and also included probably a few too many games i haven’t finished yet, but this is probably it
Took quite a few creative liberties with several of the genres. Also, there’s a heavy recency bias here since my memory is terrible.
Update: Decided I would circle back to this and pitch a few of the games people are least likely to be familiar with.
- Squeakross (Fave Slow Puzzle)- This is easily the best nonogram game (think Picross) I have ever played. You start by creating your cute rat character. Then, you complete nonogram puzzles to unlock furniture to outfit your rat’s house. As you progress, you’ll receive in-game emails featuring photos of real-life rodent pets. It’s one of the most charming games I’ve played. Can’t be beat in the "nonogram + " niche.
- Theme Hospital (Fave Management Sim)- It was pretty popular and still is in some circles, but it’s 30 years old, so I’m sure many people are unfamiliar with it. It’s a hospital management sim with quirky diseases you’ll need to outfit your facility to handle like bloaty head (which needs to be first popped before re-inflating to proper levels).
- Gloomhaven (Fave Board/Card)- This is an adaptation of a board game that became incredibly popular in those circles. I played it a ton with my family, and the adaptation here is good. It’s mostly a tactical combat game, but it has great character progression. In battle, you feel like you’re frequently able to make weighty decisions that affect the outcome, and out of battle, you’re given even weighty-er decisions around how your character will evolve.
- Wildermyth (Fave Tactical RPG)- The magic of Wildermyth is in making it feel like you’re creating a story in much the same way a tabletop RPG might. You might imagine this would feel hollow since what happens in the game is procedurally generated, but it manages to avoid that somehow.
- Cryptmaster (Fave Dungeon Crawler)- Typing is the central mechanic, but not in the style of Typing of the Dead. Speed is important, but the more important thing is deciding what to type. You’ll need to guess each of your party members’ spells and abilities in order to unlock them. The writing is witty too and had me laughing out loud.
If you see any others you’re curious about, feel free to ask, and I can elaborate.
YEAH… Neon White IS a puzzle platformer.
