Favorite JRPG Party Members

If there’s one thing that Atlus never fucks up, it’s making characters that feel real and that you can grow attached to. I love P3, but I looooove the small town, everybody knows everybody vibe of P4 as well - especially with the initial group of MC, Yosuke, and Chief (not trying to say that the whole squad is dookie or anything though)

I have a few favorites from my youth. These are characters I just love for no real reason, but I’ll still think about and love the games they are from.

Rutee from Tales of Destiny is just a cool design. To this day, when a game lets me create a character, I make a “Rutee” and they favor red visually

Tai Ho and Yam Koo were rad because their support was essential in Suikoden, but they weren’t “heroes,” they were just fishermen. They were simple but that made them unique to me.

I love all of Suikoden III’s protagonists, but Chris gets a slight edge. I think her story is a bit more interesting and complex, but again, I loved them all.

Another of my favorite RPG Parties comes from Live A Live but is definitely spoilers so tagging as such:

The eclectic cast you can build from the multiple genres in the game really elevated it from a game I liked to a game I loved the first time I played it. Seeing my lonely cowboy, last surviving martial artist, goofy caveman, and pacifist-run ninja all team up together to fight a weird collage of enemies was really something. What a game.

And if you haven’t played Live A Live definitely give it some consideration - either the SNES original or the recent HD-2D remake. There’s nothing else quite like it.

Balthier & Fran, they’re just a great pair and are almost always in my party whenever I play FF12

Going with an odd pick here, but perhaps my favorite JRPG adjacent game ever is the first Front Mission game (the original SNES version, I have played a fan translation of it through multiple times), followed by Front Mission 3 on PSX. I love Frederick in Front Mission 1, easy to make into a decent melee character and just having a character that’s a random journalist sucked into the fighting changing a lot of the story is pretty cool.

Of course, in Front Mission 3, having Pham in the party is great. She has decent speed for her Wanzer, and getting a free character to follow you around (Pierre) so you can deploy 5 Wanzers instead of 4 is pretty overpowered in a lot of missions when you’re underleveled as well.
