Coffee Chat (and other drinks)

The chefs didn’t have any heavy cream so I haven’t been able to try the recipe proper, but I did make a variant today with what I had to hand!

Ingredients

  • 25ml hot chocolate mix
  • Dbl espresso
  • 1 1/4 cups coconut milk
  • 1tbsp honey
  • 4 ice cubes

All ingredients but the ice were mixed well, before being poured over the ice. Honestly might have been an idea to use a cocktail shaker to aerate, would probably have been pretty good!

My takeaway - never going to be my thing, the sweetness from the coconut, chocolate and honey overwhelms the espresso, but I absolutely could understand why someone might enjoy

I’ll attempt again at some point in the future, we usually have cream about so I’ll be able to make the actual recipe next time once it’s back in

(Edits to cover multiple dumb typos, apologies!)

Our town used to have a tea shop…

I miss the stroopwafels. T^T

Stroopwafels are wonderful, I’m sorry for your loss

Does anyone else here use an Aeropress? I love mine, I got one 5 years ago now. I enjoy being able to still brew coffee without electricity, and it does a much better job than a French Press. So easy to clean up as well.

Yep, love it! I still enjoy my v60 and Chemex when I want to make coffee into a little more of a ritual (timing my pours feels like something between science and magic if I’m in the right mood lol), but hard to beat Aeropress for both ease of use and consistently excellent coffee - couldn’t live without it these days

Easy cleaning a massive plus too, agreed there

I loooove coffee, but I am a weakling to caffeine.. i drink a substitute and I’m a very simple coffee > creamer > milk kinda guy. My FAVORITE coffee I’d ever had from a chain of any kind is First Watch of all places. It’s perfectly creamy and light I looove it. If u couldnt tell already I love it SWEET.

I also rly rly like tea! I like chai and matcha more specifically but I have others here n there. I make my own matcha at home! ^__^

Chai is generally a little too sweet for me, but I can absolutely see the appeal with all of the spices going on. Particularly intruiged by your matcha though - would love to hear more! I’m typically more sencha if I’m going for green tea so any tips you have would be great

honestly I don’t do anything too crazy! I just sweeten it with monkfruit sweetener (instead of sugar) and whick it together with the sugar, then serve it cold w milk! ^^ A lot of tiktok recipes will tell u do whisk it with hot water but that has genuinely never worked out for me. I also havent had sencha, but I’m curious to try it!

Monk fruit? It sounds like an RPG quest item.

I’m a little late but yes! I have the same book! My ex roommate brought it back for me last week, I need to check the recipes again

Recently we lost power during the cold and had to rely on our wood stove to keep warm. It did a great job, but something I’d never tried before was brewing coffee on it via a moka pot. It’s meant for espresso so I had to temper it with water but it was really good and now I’m using the moka pot (and the fire when available) to make coffee whenever I can

My favorite way to make coffee is pour-over. I have one of those cheapo plastic things you sit on top of your mug, which fits a #2 size (cone-shaped) filter. You can get the ones with reusable filters in them but I unfortunately don’t have the patience for the cleanup. I also have a regular old drip coffee maker, since pour-over takes a while, especially if you have multiple guests who want a cup; you’ll just be standing there slowly pouring water for the rest of your life I stfg. Anyway, i find pour-over really brings out the flavor in a way other methods don’t, so it’s perfect for fancier stuff you really want to savor.

I actually don’t buy anything too super fancy, but I’m lucky to have a cooperative market in my area with fair trade brands like Equal Exchange (their Ethiopian is my favorite) and some local stuff too. I suppose that actually would be fancy to most people🤔 but it tastes so much better than Starbucks or whatever kind is in most grocery stores, and it isn’t even more costly. So I dont feel too snooty about it lol

Pourover is wonderful, totally agree with you that done right it can really flatter good coffee - I really need to start using my v60 again, it’s been too long!

I loooooooove black coffee but I have a really hard time getting it right. I use a French press and I prefer darker roasts, and when I manage to make a good cup it’s unbeatable. I can’t ever get it consistent though, I might be approaching it wrong. nobody online seems to agree on the right way to approach making it…

I would spend more time refining my method but I can’t drink too much anymore without it messing me up, since I’m on a medication that amplifies the effects of the caffeine. I’ve been thinking about trying pour over since that’s what it suggests on the bag for the brand I usually like getting (Doma). I’ve also tried making cold brew for myself but it’s never as good as the stuff you can buy in concentrate at the grocery store.

So I ran out of Aeropress filters (that was an emotionally devastating realisation this morning, not sure I’ve recovered yet), and as a result I’ve had to brew V60 for the first time in ages.

My technique is abysmal right now as I am woefully out of practice, so the resulting brew was muddy and confused with way less clarity than I’d have liked, but even so it’s made me realise just how much I’d missed pourover. Compared to brewing aeropress, it’s bringing out a distinct fruity flavour that I just wasn’t getting from this batch of coffee before.

I would continue to refine my technique and grind setting, but I am now also sadly out of V60 papers so will instead be switching to Chemex as they’re the only filters I have left. Still, I should be able to get similar results from Chemex with a bit of work - let’s see how I get on!

I’m a big fan of cold brew. I got a jar steeping in the fridge right now.

Cold brew is a game changer for me, since i cannot stand hot drinks and regular iced coffee does not taste good to me.

I try a variety of beans so i couldn’t really say what type of bean i like most, other than lighter roasts. Usually i add a small amount of sweetened creamer and make my daily coffee 1/2 coffee concentrate - 1/2 milk. I would love to get one of those fancy japanese glass tower cold brew devices but that’s probably a bad idea with a cat running around. not to mention that those are expensive.

Anyone a fan of cold brew?

I’ve never been much of a fan of cold brew, although if I’m honest I can’t say I’ve ever given it the fair chance it deserves - I should really give it another shot

Lighter roasts are absolutely the way, agree wholeheartedly on that!

I don’t drink coffee or tea and I’m pretty much sworn off of energy drinks. I barely touch soda anymore.

That said, I do drink the GamerSupps drink mix. Enough caffeine and some electrolytes and a few other things, but nothing that harmful, as long as you stick to less than 4 scoops of powder per day.

Started getting it because I needed to cut down on my soda intake. I went from being almost pre-diabetic to losing 20 lbs. I’m still overweight, but not as bad.

Chemex results:

PROS

  • Looks very, very pretty
  • Makes me feel like a chemist doing important experiments

CONS

  • Tricky to brew well, especially compared to V60
  • Gigantic pain in the arse to clean

These days I mostly drink decaf tea and water, with some trips into energy drinks (because not having a consistent supply of ADHD meds makes you do that) and occasionally, when feeling spendy an oatmilk latte at a coffee place I happen to be near to.

I used to be more into coffee, but ever since moving I’ve made it a goal of mine to not be constantly drinking it because even if the caffeine doesn’t keep me awake, it is not the healthiest thing to drink 4 cups a day of it either.
