After Hiroki Kikuta delivered the uniformly phenomenal Secret of Mana soundtrack, and a soundtrack for Seiken Densetsu 3/Trials of Mana that is very strong throughout, I have always had a huge issue with that game’s final boss song. The final boss gauntlet is three parts, and the first two are dark, weird, and ominous, making heavy use of droning synths and unusual percussion. In fact, parts one and two of the Sacrifice songs make extensive and clever use of the game’s pot smash VFX as a percussive element, slowed way down (seriously, Sacrifice Part Two is like more than half constructed out of pot smash).

And then, Sacrifice Part Three is a really thinly arranged prog rock thing with sections that don’t develop into one another, fairly basic chord blocks, weak drums, and an opening that sounds like a rough draft of Secret of Mana’s phenomenal final boss song, Meridian Dance. It has always struck me as a sadly sour note to end an otherwise excellent duology of soundtracks on.

Is it really worth defending the work of a man who’s entire career evaporated because he got outed as both a plagiarist and also faking being deaf for sympathy points?

Anyways, you’ll know exactly why I picked this one once the vocals kick in

Oh my god I’m getting flashback to the let’s play that destroyed Two Best Friends play lol. How David Cage ever got more money to make games afte this is a mystery I don’t want to know the answer to.

Hold up, I need the lore of this.

Basically their playthrough was so disastrous and stressful because of how weird the game is and a few serious nearly game breaking bugs that it exacerbated already strained relationships and probably hastened the inevitable.

Honestly pretty okay, until the twenty-five second mark, where it just briefly breaks down for a bit before coming back together. For Genesis sound chip stuff, that’s pretty average outside that one bit. As far as Sonic music goes, though, that’s definitely bottom of the barrel due to Sonic music being great

The first few seconds of this song will always make me laugh but I think that’s mainly because of the years I spent on early YouTube

ah it won’t allow playback. it’s the music from Drakengard. i do like odd experimental music but this is v grating having this on a loop

Drakengard has a lot of issues but the music being repetitive isn’t really what I would call one of them. It never bothered me and felt appropriate for the fucked shit that was going on. Now what really made me grind my gears was how often a swarm of fire arrows would force me off the dragon.

being more generous to award-winning Bioware composer Jack Wall (who himself kept trying to refuse his way out of the position and kept getting no-i-insist-ed back into the chair until he gave up and got to work), you can really tell he started figuring out the midi soundscape near the final levels. It’s just unfortunate that one of the first levels he made was the hub city level and it shows. I’m glad people have gotten more charitable towards that song in recent times, though. I recall someone took the composition stems and just used a different soundscape and it came out like a decently sonic-esque hub song. just. you know. midi is it’s own beast.

For my contribution I wanna bring up the Spider-Man Vs the Kingpin duology of releases on Sega Genesis and Sega CD

While both aren’t terrible on their own, I wanna bring to attention just how starkly different the two tones are. I played the Genesis one a ton and wasn’t aware there was a Sega CD port, and I assumed the tone of the game about stopping a bomb from blowing up Manhattan was this, dour, The-Wire-esque contemplative thing about a hopeless city and one Spider Man facing an entire city of crime to try to save it from it’s own demise.

Then I saw the Sega CD version, and realized very quickly, no, it was just an extremely mismatched tone for an adaptation of the kids cartoon.

I almost feel bad about posting this:

Cruelty Squad is 100% intentional about everything it does, and that includes the music. So in that sense, this is not a ‘bad’ soundtrack.
But well, nobody is going to bump this outside of the game.
