Shinobi: Art of Vengeance did these really, really well. They’re so quick and you can execute multiple enemies at a time for even more rewards. Fuck, that game rules
Speed really is a factor here. I don’t want to press a button to watch a 60-second repetitive animation of the same war crimes over and over.
Now that I think about it… I’ve never really played a live service game. I don’t know if that’s because I dislike them necessarily. I don’t often like timed events in games tho I guess. I am always having to slide my gaming into my schedule where I can and I can’t ever keep up with games that have events or daily log in bonuses or whatever. It just stresses me out conceptually.
I’m 2025, the feature I hate most in video games is save points.
Just auto save the game. All the time. Did I load into a new map? Auto save. Did I open the menu and change literally anything? Auto save.
And then give me the option to manually save whenever I want - because I love auto save but I absolutely will not trust it as my only save data.
Not allowing me to save isn’t make your game hard. It’s making your game frustrating.
My tolerance for save points in retro games is still intact but just barely. If I have the option to play with save states, I absolutely will.
I get that shit. Reminds me of the stealth kills in Deus Ex: Human Revolution ![]()
Or the FOMO that comes with that shit, like limited skins and stuff. If they’re never gonna be available again, I’m gonna wanna buy it up
Fortnite fucking got me this year with the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers skins. I swore I wasn’t gonna buy any cosmetics but then they hit me where I live.
They almost got me with the gorillaz skins
Luckily i don’t have it installed anymore so it was easier to pretend i didn’t see it
Smite always got me with the crossover skins. Especially TMNT, Transformers, and fucking Slipknot of all things ![]()

Got him in the battle pass but no way I’ll hit level 200 to claim the black & gold variant before the end of the current pass.
I’m too employed.
Absolutely. Modern games are really bad at making unlocks actually exciting or interesting. I think the last time we got anything remotely interesting in the big game space was DMC5, which was just doing what every DMC does and introduces new weapons as you go through the story and let you use orbs to unlock new moves that can have huge impact on your playstyle.
The unlock system in the modern DOOM games are my biggest issue with them, just absolutely bloated with boring upgrades (don’t get me started on the Eternal grenades).
I love DMC5 but I’m still disappointed that the girls are non-characters and Vergil didn’t get his own story mode tbh.
Vergil did in the same way he did for 3 with a special edition release.
That said, fully agree on the women being non-characters point. Honestly I think DMC5 might be the worst written of the series, second only to 2 being mostly unfinished, because it’s Itsuno and his collaborators flexing their worst creative instincts. Nobody talked him out of bone-headed decisions on the level of Lady not killing Arkham because it would be sad if a daughter killed her father, an actual thing he suggested during DMC3’s development.
Games that make themselves worse in order to introduce monetization that brings back the normal flow is so ass. I mean it makes sense, most of these are mobile games and if you’re a free player you’re just using up server resources so I get why they don’t want me, but it’s such an ass way to try to make me pay and it usually just balloons into more predatory monetization from there.
Obligatory ark rant: they had a good game about getting killed by dinosaurs and then they introduced a lion to the dinosaur game and the lion was on fire and will one shot you off your mount with fireballs and you can’t tame it unless you pay 15 bucks. It still spawns on your map though! Oh and it’s amazing for pvp so if you want a pvp chance you gotta pony up or die now. I don’t pvp so it doesn’t affect me but it was still such a supremely shit move to pull. Apparently it was very effective because they’ve kept adding paywalled bullshit ever since.
Smite got me with the avatar collab, i will admit
Went back to play it just for the skins, grinded the shit out of it to make it to the end of the battlepass
Got it, then never touched it again
yupppppppppppp. I haven’t touched Smite 1 in a hot minute since Smite 2 came out. But even then, it’s been a few months since I touched Smite 2
Based tbh.
I started playing the NDS version of the first Ys and cannot stop dying on the very first enemy because I thought I had to bump into enemies but it turns out I needed to press a button………………
That’s absolutely against what the bump combat is
in the original you just have to bump into them at an angle, not head on
